Colchicine 0.5mg Tablets are hyperuricemia agents. It belongs to the class of xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It is available under the brand name Colcrys abroad. In India, it is known by the name Zycolchin.

 

Purpose:

  • Colchicine 0.5mg Tablets are indicated for the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout.
  • It is also indicated for the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia in adult patients undergoing chemotherapy for haematological malignancies.
  • High uric acid levels are reduced by this drug.
  • Attacks of pain in the joints, abdomen, or chest caused by familial Mediterranean fever is also cured by Colcrys tablets.

 

Mechanism:

The production of amyloid A protein is deducted by this drug, thus preventing the development of familial Mediterranean fever. The amount of serum uric acid is also lowered in the body.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage of Zycolchin for effective results is 1 mg, daily, for 3 days.
  • The maximum dosage recommendation is 1.5 mg, in a day.
  • The dosage is also based on your weight, age, current health conditions, and response to the treatment.
  • Renal impairment patients require special adjustments to the dosage.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Colchicine 0.5mg Tablets are nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, lightheadedness, fatigue, stomachache, vomiting among others.
  • Serious side effects of this drug are cholecystitis, hepatitis, herpes zoster, contusion, hepatomegaly, edema, gait disturbance, hypersensitivity, joint stiffness, agitation, panic attack, incontinence, pruritus, hypotension, eosinophilia.
  • Some severe heart problems might occur.
  • Slurring of speech, sudden blurry vision, numbness in one side of the body might be experienced.
  • If any of the side effects persist for long, or bother you, consult your doctor as early as possible.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Consume enough fluid, at least 3 litres daily, during the tenure of Colchicine 0.5mg Tablets.
  • Do not stop taking Zycolchin if you experience gout attacks. This could make the attack worse.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to worsening of the situation.
  • Limit your time under the sun. Use sunscreen when outdoors, and be fully clothed.
  • It may take several months for the results of this medication to show up.
  • Take the tablet at the same time every day, for the most effective results.
  • Do not crush, split, or break the tablets.
  • Store it at room temperature.
  • Do not use expired medication.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had a medical history of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, chest pain, organ transplant, or cancer, before starting with Zycolchin medicine.
