Purpose

Denosumab 120mg injection is a human IgG2 monoclonal antibody.  This binds to the human RANKL which further helps in stopping the growth of bone tumor cells. The medication comes under the international brand name of Prolia and an Indian brand name of xgeva.

 

How does it work?

Xgeva injection works by binding to the part of tumor cells and inhibit the further growth of these types of cells. It binds to the human RANKL.  The antibody used in this has a molecular weight of 147 kDa which is produced in genetically engineered mammalian hamster egg cells.

 

Measures and precautions

  1. Denosumab 120mg injection is a sterile, preservative-free, clear to colorless to pale yellow solution packed in vials.
  2. The injection is prescribed to inhibit the growth of certain tumor cells in the body.
  3. Prolia injections are characteristically prescribed for the prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with myeloma cell production.
  4. The xgeva injection is recommended for patients who have a mature skeletal system.
  5. In old people, it should be used with cautions.
  6. Denosumab 120mg injection is intended for the subcutaneous route only. It should be used through this only. No other means should be entertained like intramuscularly, intradermally, intravenously.
  7. The recommended dose of xgeva is 120mg which is administered subcutaneously.
  8. The dose should be given every 4 weeks in the upper arm, abdomen, or upper thigh.
  9. With the dose of this injection, do administer calcium and vitamin D which is necessary to treat hypocalcemia.
  10. Do not overdose the injection. It can be fatal for the user body.
  11. The injection comes in single dose only.
  12. Do not increase or decrease the doses yourself. This can be harmful to the user body.
  13. Avoid the use of medication if the sealed pack exceeds 14 days.
  14. See the expiry date before using it. Don’t use the medication if it is expired.
  15. Avoid vigorous shaking of the injection vial. It is not advised.

Storage

Denosumab 120mg injection should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of 2o C to 80C in its vial or carton. Do not try to freeze the injection. Once the medication is removed from the refrigerator, it should not be exposed to sunlight or above temperatures 25 degrees/77-degree F.
