The Rabies Vaccine is used to treat people who have been bitten by an animal that is already infected by the virus. This vaccine is an immunizing agent used for the treatment of infection caused by the Rabies virus. The infection can also occur if a person is exposed to the infected environment or works as a veterinarian, animal keeper, personnel in rabies research.  It is sold under the brand name Verorab worldwide.

Mechanism:

Rabies Vaccines are an inactive or weakened form of the virus you are infected with. So, when the vaccine is administered into the body it acts by stimulating the body to produce certain antibodies that develop immunity to protect against the virus.

Dosage:

• The dose of this injectiondepends upon the pre and post-exposure to the virus and also on the condition of the patient.
• The vaccine should be administered by the doctor or under his guidance by the nurse.
• The vaccine is given intramuscularly in the deltoid region for adults and young children.
• For children below 2 years of age, the vaccine is injected into the anterolateral thigh.
• The recommended dose for the pre-exposure virus is about 3mL given 3 times on the day of 0, 7, 27.
• The recommended dose for post-exposure to viruses is given in the alternative days of 0, 3, 7, 14, and 30.
• Do not self-administer the Verorab vaccine and if you missed any dose then immediately consult your doctor.

Side effects:

• The common side effects of the Rabies Vaccine include irritation at the site of injection, rashes, and redness which will disappear once your body adjusts with the dose of the drug.
• Swelling in the lymph, joint pains may also appear.
• Seizures, hallucinations are seen in some rare conditions. Do consult your physician if these symptoms occur due to the intake of Verorab.

Interactions:

• Have a word with your doctor if you have any allergic reactions to the Rabies Vaccine.
• There are no clinical studies that study any effects of alcohol intake along with the vaccine. Therefore, please consult your doctor.
• This vaccine is safe for pregnant women and does not cause any harmful effects to the fetus.
• It is also safe to use in the lactating mother as it does not cause any adverse reactions to the infants.

It is not known whether the Verorab vaccine is safe to use in liver disorder and renal impairment patients. So, consult your physician.
