Venlafaxine HCl 37.5mg, 75mg, 150mg Capsules are Antidepressant agents that are categorized under Anxiolytics. It is used for the treatment of depression. In India, it is known by the name of Venlor – XR. Internationally it is available under the brand name of Effexor and Efexor.

Purpose:

  • Venlafaxine HCl 37.5mg, 75mg, 150mg Capsules are mainly meant to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
  • It is also indicated for the treatment of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia.
  • Panic Disorder is also treated with Efexor medication.

 

Mechanism:

Venlor – XR maintains the mental balance by increasing the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline (chemical messengers), which are natural substances of our brain.

 

Dosage:

  • For Major Depressive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Patients: 75 mg per day, in a single dose. For some patients, it may be broken down into 37.5 mg of Venlor – XR  tablets, twice a day.
  • For Panic Disorder patients: 36.5 mg of Effexor for 7 days.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of this drug are diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness, constipation, or increased sweating.
  • Increased Risk of Bleeding
  • Urinary Hesitation and Retention
  • Discontinuation Syndrome
  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma
  • Orthostatic Hypotension, Falls and Syncope
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Hyponatremia
  • Clinically Important Drug Interactions
  • Severe side effects of Venlafaxine HCl 37.5mg, 75mg, 150mg Capsules are muscle spasms, influenza, tremors, somnolence, seizures, convulsions, hyperhidrosis, bruxism, abnormal dreams, orthostatic hypotension, peripheral coldness among others.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Do not increase, decrease, or discontinue the medication at your own ease.
  • Visit your doctor right away, if you develop a high fever or sore throat.
  • If you have had a personal or family medical history of bipolar disorder, glaucoma, kidney disease, liver disease, seizure disorder, abuse of alcohol, or high blood pressure, inform your doctor before starting with this medication.
  • If you develop suicidal thoughts, sudden mood changes, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Do not crush, break or split the Venlor – XR capsules.
  • Keep these capsules away from kids and pets.
  • If you are a diabetes patient, keep a check on your blood sugar levels regularly, while being on this treatment.
  • Prohibit the intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it may lead to extreme sleepiness and drowsiness.

 

Interactions:

Avoid taking MAO inhibitors such as Moclobemide, Isocarboxazid, Methylene Blue, Pehelzine, Safinamide, Procarbazine, Selegiline, Rasagiline, and Tranylcypromine along with Venlafaxine HCl 37.5mg, 75mg, 150mg Capsules as it can be fatal.
