Details
Bortezomib 1mg, 3.5mg Injection is an Anticancer agent. It contains an antineoplastic agent, bortezomib which is a modified boronic acid. This drug belongs to the class of bisphosphonates. Velcade is the universal name of this drug, by which it is available in the medical market.
Purpose:
- Bortezomib 1mg, 3.5mg Injection is used to treat adults with cancer of the bone marrow (multiple myeloma).
- It can be prescribed for people who have received one or more prior treatments and whose cancer is still progressing.
- Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)that may occur with cancer is also treated with this drug.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- The dose of Velcade will be calculated from your weight and height.
- Other factors such as kidney and liver function, and response to the medication, are also taken into consideration.
- The recommended dosage for effective results is 1.3mg per square meter body surface area.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Velcade are nausea, diarrhea, fever, lightheadedness, headache, vomiting among others.
- Serious side effects of this injection are peripheral neuropathy, hypotension, cardiac toxicity, pulmonary toxicity, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, gastrointestinal toxicity, neutropenia, tumor lysis syndrome, hepatic toxicity, thrombotic microangiopathy among others.
- If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, consult your doctor right away.
Precautions and measures:
- If you’ve had an allergic reaction to bisphosphonates, this medication is not for you.
- Prohibit or at the very least limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it will increase your dizziness and sleepiness.
- Do not get any vaccinations or immunizations done during the tenure of this drug.
- Keep washing your hands thoroughly.
- Do not use sharp objects like nail cutters cautiously, to prevent bruising and bleeding.
- While being on this treatment, men should not plan to father a child. This drug is likely to affect sperm production and harm the unborn baby.
- Bortezomib 1mg, 3.5mg Injection is absorbed via lungs and skin and therefore should not be used by pregnant and lactating women.
- This medication is meant for single use only.
- Make sure the nib of injection doesn’t come in contact with the blood vessel.
Interaction:
- While being on the medication of Velcade, avoid consuming other bisphosphonates, and other drugs used to treat bone loss such as zoledronic acid.
Medicines that can interact with this Bortezomib 1mg, 3.5mg Injection and produce reverse results are Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Tacrolimus, Ibuprofen, and Amphotericin B.
