Drug Name: Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine
Details
Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine is used to prevent typhoid fever. It is meant for intramuscular use. Typherix is the universal name of this vaccine, by which it is available in the medical market.
Purpose:
Typherix is indicated for active immunization against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella Typhi in individuals 3 years of age and above.
Mechanism:
Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine strengthens the immunity from within and whenever the body is faced with foreign organisms, the body activates antibodies and fights against the Salmonella Typhi virus and prevents it from entering the human body.
Dosage:
- People between 0-19yrs of age should be injected with 3 doses. Initial dose, second dose after a month, and third dose after 6 months of 0.5ml each.
- Adolescents between 11-15yrs of age should be injected with 2 doses. Initial dose and second dose after 6 months of 1ml each.
- People above the age of 20, dialysis and predialysis patients should be injected with 3 doses. Initial dose, second dose after a month, and third dose after 6 months of 1 ml each.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine are nausea, vomiting, fever, tiredness, headache, sore throat, loss of appetite, and diarrhea.
- Instant side effects can be ringing in the ears, dizziness, changes in vision, or fainting.
- If any serious side effects such as allergic reaction, swelling, or breathing problem are experienced by you, consult your doctor right away.
- In rare cases, a nervous system disorder, Syncope might appear.
Precautions:
- Always shake the syringe well before use.
- Do not mix Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine with the syringe of any other vaccine.
- Caps of prefilled syringes contain rubber latex, which can be a source of an allergic reaction.
- The injection should be administered under the skin or into a muscle.
- It may not provide full protection to each of the people getting this done.
- Typherix is meant for people only above the age of two.
- Do not operate heavy machinery or drive as the vaccine can lead to dizziness.
- Inform your doctor about your current health statuses, such as obesity, and your drinking and smoking habits.
- Once the syringe bottle is decapped, it should be used there and then.
- Do not use the containers of syringes for any other storage purposes.
Interactions:
Some products that can react with the Typherix vaccine are corticosteroids, cyclosporine, cancer chemotherapy, and tacrolimus. They can weaken the immune system, and reduce the effect of the vaccine.
