Emtricitabine 200mg + Tenofovir 300mg Tablets are Antiviral drugs. It is a synthetic nucleoside analog of cytidine. The international brand name of this drug is Truvada. However, it is also known by the name of Tenvir – EM in India.

Purpose:

Truvada is used to treat the following conditions:

• HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 17 kg, in combination with other antiretroviral drugs.
• Pre-exposure prophylaxis in at-risk adults and adolescents weighing at least 35kg, to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 infection.

 

Mechanism:

Tenvir – EM is a combination of two anti-HIV medicines, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and Emtricitabine. This medication prevents the HIV virus from multiplying and therefore reduces the amount of virus in the body. The white blood cell count is also increased in the blood, which protects the body against infection.

 

Dosage:

• Emtricitabine 200mg + Tenofovir 300mg Tablets for HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 35 kg: once daily, taken orally, with or without food.
• The recommended dosage for HIV-1 infection in pediatric patients weighing 17 kg – less than 35 kg: 167 mg/250 mg Truvada tablet, once daily, taken orally, with or without food.

 

Side effects:

• Common side effects of Tenvir – EM are nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, and vomiting.
• Severe side effects of Emtricitabine 200mg + Tenofovir 300mg Tablets are bone loss and mineralization defects, severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B in patients with HBV infection, lactic acidosis, immune reconstitution syndrome, and new onset of renal impairment.
• Other side effects can be pancreatitis, abdominal pain, dyspnea, hypokalemia, hypophosphatemia, and osteomalacia.
• If any of the above-mentioned symptoms are experienced, visit your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

• Inform your doctor about any medical history of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cirrhosis, bone disease, osteoporosis, weak bones, pancreatitis, or kidney disease, if any.
• Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
• If you’re planning to have an operation or a dental surgery, discuss the risks and benefits of the same while being treated with Truvada.
• In pregnancy, Tenvir – EM tablets should only be used when prescribed by the doctor.
• Do not crush, break, or split this drug.
• Keep this medication away from kids and pets.
• Store it at the room temperature.

 

Interactions:

Some products can react with Emtricitabine 200mg + Tenofovir 300mg Tablets and cause negative results, such as adefovir, orlistat, amikacin, and gentamicin.
