Oxytocin 5 IU Injection available by brand name Syntocinon 5 IU Injection is chemically identical to what is naturally produced by the pituitary gland in the body.

Uses:

Syntocinon 5 IU Injection is given in the conditions where there is the need of vaginal delivery. Its various uses are:

• For induction of labor (when it is suitable and there is no harm to the foetus and the mother).
• For increasing contractions during the labor.
• For the treatment of incomplete abortion.
• For the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage.

 

Dosage:

Dosage of Oxytocin 5 IU Injection depends upon the uterine response. It is provided as a sterile solution to be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Each 1 ml vial of the injection contains 10 international units of oxytocin.

• For induction of labor- 10 mU/ml given intravenously and gradually.
• In case of postpartum haemorrhage- 10-40 units mixed with 1000 ml diluent given intravenously or 1 ml intramuscularly.
• In case of incomplete abortion- 10 units mixed with 500 ml saline solution.

 

Side effects:

Side effects caused by Syntocinon 5 IU Injection are both major and minor.

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
• Premature ventricular contractions/ uterine contractions
• Allergies
• Increased blood loss
• Foetal brain damage/ death

 

Precautions and measures:

Most of the side effects caused by Oxytocin 5 IU Injection do not require any medical treatment but precautionary measures need to be taken such as:

• Doctors should be careful while administering Syntocinon 5 IU injection as over stimulation may be risky for both mother and foetus.
• Regular check-up for hypertonic contraction must be done.
• Do not administer the injection if there are conditions such as prematurity, caesarean section in the uterus, surgery on the cervix, invasive cervical carcinoma, grand multiarity or borderline cephalopelvic disproportion.
• Patient should inform the doctor if she has migraine as the injection can make the headache unbearable.
• Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the active ingredients in the injection.
• Inform you doctor if you had/have heart, liver or kidney disorders.
• Inform your doctor if you are anaemic as the injection may lead to heavy blood loss from the body.
