Montelukast 4mg, 5mg, 10mg Tablets are Antihistamine, Antiallergic, and Antiasthmatic agents. These tablets are an orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist which inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor. Singulair is the name by which this drug is known worldwide.
Purpose:
- Montelukast 4mg, 5mg, 10mg Tablets treat prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, including the prevention of day and nighttime symptoms.
- Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm.
- It gives relief from daytime and nighttime symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Mechanism:
A chemical messenger, leukotriene is blocked by these tablets. This results in the reduction of inflammation in the airways to relieve symptoms of allergy and prevent asthma.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- For children 2-5 years of age: 4mg chewable tablet, once daily.
- For children 6-14 years of age: 5mg chewable tablet, once daily.
- For children 15+ and adults: 10mg, once daily.
- The maximum recommended dosage in a day is 10 mg for effective results.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Montelukast 4mg, 5mg, 10mg Tablets are dizziness, sleepiness, headache, lightheadedness, vomiting, dry mouth, stomachache, among others.
- Serious effects are dyspepsia, influenza, asthenia, pancreatitis, pulmonary eosinophilia, epistaxis, palpitations, hypoesthesia, and hypersensitivity reactions.
- In rare cases, a person might experience nightmares and sleepwalk.
- If any of the above-mentioned effects persist for long, visit your doctor right away, before the situation worsens.
- A very serious skin reaction due to the consumption of Singulair is rare.
- Thrombocytopenia is a blood system disorder, which might show up in some patients.
Precautions and measures:
- Singulair should not be used to treat acute asthma attacks.
- It should not be substituted for oral corticosteroids or inhaled.
- No dosage adjustment is required in people with renal impairment.
- Pregnant and lactating women should consume Montelukast 4mg, 5mg, 10mg Tablets only under the strict guidance of their doctor.
- If you have exercise-induced asthma, take this capsule 2 hours before the workout.
- Do not increase, decrease, or stop the treatment at your convenience.
- Avoid taking the tablet at night.
- Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness.
- Avoid indulging in the tasks that require utmost attention, such as driving.
- Do not use expired medication.
- It can be mixed in cold water and then given to younger children.
- Store Singulair tablets at room temperature.
- The growth rate of pediatric patients is not hindered by this medicine.
