Details
Basiliximab 20mg Injection is an immunosuppressive agent used as prophylaxis treatment or in combination with other immunosuppressants.
It is a prescription only drug.
It is well tolerated and premedication is not required.
It is a murine/human chimeric monoclonal antibody produced by recombinant DNA technology.
Mechanism of action:it is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that acts by binding to CD25, the InterLeukin-2 receptor α chain present on the surface of the activated T lymphocytes.This binding inhibits T lymphocytes proliferation and decreases or stops the cellular immune response against the transplant.
It is available as Simulect in both International and Indian markets.
Uses
- Basiliximab 20mg Injection is prescribed in acute rejection of the kidney transplant along with glucocorticoids and cyclosporine.
- Simulect is used as prophylaxis in acute kidney, heart and liver transplantation rejection because of its very good response.
- It is also used in treatment of Refractory Acute GVHD.
Dosage
- Simulect comes as a 20 mg sterile freeze-dried white powder vial & solvent ampule and reconstituted with solvent (5 ml water) before injection or infusion.
- It is given intravenously either as injection or infusion by the healthcare professionals only.
- Usually Basiliximab 20mg Injection dose given as prophylaxis and treatment is 20mg IV before the surgery followed by 20mb IV for 4 days after transplant in adults.
- In children, it is given as 10mg IV 2 hours before surgery then 10mg IV for 4 days.
- Dosages are determined by the doctor according to the severity of condition, pre existing medical condition, weight, response and side effects of the body to the drug.
- Dosages are also adjusted according to the dose related side effects
- It is stored at 2°C – 8°C temperature in the refrigerator and a reconstituted solution can be stored for 24 hours at 2°C – 8°C or for 4 hours at room temperature.

- Lymphoproliferative disorders
Precautions
- Basiliximab 20mg Injection is not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers.
- Careful monitoring and follow ups are necessary by healthcare professionals to avoid hypersensitive reaction, infections and lymphoproliferative malfunctions..
- Tell the doctor about ongoing medications and any allergy before starting the drug.
- Always tell the doctor about pregnancy or future plan of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Simulect is contraindicated in hypersensitivity reaction to Basiliximab.
