Oral Cholera vaccine is used to prevent cholera by producing immunological defence against the infection in the gut region. It is known as Dukoral in the world. In India, it is known by the name Shanchol.

How does it work?

When the Shanchol vaccine is administered, your body gets exposed to a small number of live cholera bacteria which results in producing antibodies to kill these bacteria and develop immunity to prevent further infections.

 

Dosage:

  • The dose of the Oral Cholera vaccine is taken as advised by the doctor.
  • The vaccination for children from 6 years of age is two doses and the first dose is given orally.
  • The second dose is given after 1 week of the first dose.
  • For children below 6 years of age three doses were given with an interval of a minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 6 weeks.
  • It takes 1 week after the last dose for protection to start.
  • In an adult, the protection period against cholera is for two years if taken 2-3 doses of the Dukoral

 

Side effects:

Like other medications, this vaccine shows some side effects too

       Common side effects:

  • Severe diarrhea
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as rashes, irritation
  • Swelling of the face

Adverse side effects:

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chills
  • Joint pain
  • High B.P

If the above-mentioned symptoms occur, get immediate medical help

 

Contraindications:

  • You should avoid the use of the Shanchol vaccine if you are allergic to any ingredient of the vaccine or formaldehyde.
  • Delay your vaccination period if you are suffering from mild stomach disorders or fever.
  • If you have any immunodeficiency disorder, talk to your doctor before taking the vaccine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are diagnosed with A.I.D.S or H.I.V beforehand to avoid harmful effects.
  • Oral Cholera vaccine should not be given to children who are younger than 2 years of age.

 

Interactions:

  • Administration of yellow fever vaccine along with cholera with 3 week intervals may result in slow production of antibodies.
  • Avoid using medications that are used to treat bacterial infections when receiving Oral Cholera vaccine.

 

Storage:

  • Shanchol should be stored in the refrigerator at 2° to 8°C. Do not freeze.
  • The vaccine should be kept away from the children.

Vaccines in the outer cartoon which are unopened bottles are stable and can be stored at room temperature of 25 up to 14 days.
