Octreotide 0.1mg, 0.05mg Injection is an acetate salt of a cyclic octapeptide. It belongs to the class of trophic hormones. The universal name of this drug is Sandostatin by the name of which it is available in the market.
Purpose:
- Octreotide 0.1mg, 0.05mg Injection is meant for reduction and symptomatic control of IGF-1 plasma levels and growth hormone in patients with acromegaly.
- It is also used for acromegalic patients who are in the interim period until radiotherapy shows its full effectiveness.
- Complications followed by pancreatic surgery can also be treated with this drug.
- Symptoms associated with gastro-entero-pancreatic endocrine tumors are treated with the help of Sandostatin solution.
Mechanism:
This injection inhibits the release of gastrin, serotonin, motilin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, pancreatic polypeptide, and secretin. The splanchnic blood flow and LH response to GnRH is also suppressed. It is a potent inhibitor of thyroid-stimulating hormone, glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- The recommended dosage of Sandostatin for effective results is 0.05 to 0.1 mg by subcutaneous injection, every 8 – 12 hours.
- For gastro-pancreatic endocrine tumors: 0.05 mg once or twice daily by subcutaneous injection.
- For complications followed by pancreatic surgery: 0.1 mg three times daily, by subcutaneous injection for one week.
- For bleeding gastro-oesophageal varices: 25 mg every hour for 5 days by continuous i.v infusion.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Octreotide 0.1mg, 0.05mg Injection are nausea, bloating, oily stools, stomach upset, constipation, gas, and headache may show up.
- Serious side effects are gallbladder abnormalities like stones or biliary sludge, sinus bradycardia, hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, urinary tract infection, flu symptoms, pollakiuria, injection site hematoma, fat malabsorption, and hair loss.
- If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, or bothers you, consult your doctor as early as possible.
Precautions and measures:
- The decrease in bile juice from the liver might happen.
- If you have had a medical history of diabetes, decreased fat absorption, gallstones, thyroid problems, liver disease l, kidney problems, or vitamin B12 deficiency, inform your doctor about the same before starting with Sandostatin solution.
- Pregnant and lactating women should only consume this drug under the strict guidance of their doctor.
- Octreotide 0.1mg, 0.05mg Injection is meant to be injected into your vein.
- Keep a regular check on your blood pressure.
- It should be given as a single injection.
- The product should not be consumed if floating particles are visible in the liquid, the seal is broken, there has been a refrigeration failure, or the liquid is colored.
Do not shake the vial before administration.
