Risperidone 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg Tablets are Atypical Antipsychotic drugs. They belong to the class of Benzisoxazole Derivatives. This medication is known by the name of Risperdal, in India as well as internationally.

 

Purpose:

Risperidone 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg Tablets are used in the treatment of:

  • Schizophrenia: affecting the person’s ability to behave clearly, think, and feel.
  • Bipolar Mania: experiencing feelings of heightened euphoria, creativity, and energy.
  • Irritability associated with autistic disorder
  • It helps in thinking clearly and being active in daily life activities.

Mechanism:

Risperidone 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg Tablets work by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances such as serotonin and dopamine Type 2 in the brain.

 

Dosage:

The recommended dosage of Risperdal for effective results in:

  • Schizophrenia in adults: 4-16 mg, once a day.
  • Schizophrenia in adolescents: 1-6mg, once a day.
  • Bipolar mania in adults, children, and adolescents: 1-6mg, once a day.
  • Irritability in autistic disorder: 0.5-3 mg, once a day.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Risperdal are lightheadedness, dizziness, drooling, drowsiness, nausea, tiredness, or weight gain.
  • Severe side effects are a rise in triglyceride levels (blood cholesterol), diabetes, and tardive dyskinesia.
  • There can be a rise in prolactin, which is a natural substance released in the body. An increase in prolactin in females can result in missed periods, unwanted breast milk, or difficulty in becoming pregnant. For males, it may result in an inability to produce sperm, enlarged breasts, or decreased sexual ability.
  • In rare cases, one might develop Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Consult your doctor right away if you experience symptoms of it, such as dark urine, irregular heartbeat, weakness, stiffness, or severe confusion.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • For diabetic patients, the exercise program and diet may be adjusted.
  • If you have had a medical history of sleep apnea, heart disease, dementia, seizures, low white blood cells count, cataract, glaucoma, high triglyceride levels, or Parkinson’s disease, inform your doctor before starting with Risperidone 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg Tablets.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Avoid doing things that might cause excessive body sweat.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should only consume this drug under the strict guidance of their doctor.
  • Do not stop taking your medication, even if you start feeling better. Complete the full course.
  • If you’re consuming medicines that cause drowsiness such as hydrocodone, cetirizine, etc. inform your doctor beforehand.

 

Interactions:

Do not consume Metoclopramide along with Risperdal as it might lead to the opposite working of the medication.
