Risedronate Sodium 35mg, 150mg Tablets is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Osteoporosis caused by menopause or steroid use. It is also known as Actonel and Benet internationally. In India, it is available under the brand name Risofos.

Uses

Risedronate Sodium 35mg, 150mg Tablets contain bisphosphonate and are prescribed for the treatment of two types of conditions that affect the bones- thinning of the bones, bone damage in people with Paget’s disease.

 

How to take it?

  • Before you start the treatment of this medication, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet carefully from inside the pack. It will give you more detailed information about the medication.
  • Take the Risofos tablets in the exact way as your doctor tells you to. There are generally three strengths of Actonel tablets available that are 35 mg and 150 mg.
  • Take your tablet as the first thing after getting up in the morning on an everyday basis.
  • If any day, you forget to take your dose in the morning, consume it as soon as you remember. Keep in mind that you must have not eaten any food item 2 hours before and should not consume two hours after it, including water.
  • Benet should be consumed on an empty stomach.

 

Side effects

Possible side effects caused by the intake of Risedronate Sodium 35mg, 150mg Tablets are:

  • Chest pain
  • New or worsening heartburn
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Pain or burning can be felt under the ribs or in the back
  • Severe heartburn
  • Burning in your upper stomach
  • Coughing up blood
  • New or unusual pain in your thigh or hip can be felt
  • Jaw pain
  • Numbness
  • Swelling
  • Severe joint, bone, or muscle pain
  • Muscle spasms or contractions
  • Numbness or tingly feeling

 

Precautions

  • Risofos generally contains the same active ingredient found in Atelvia. Therefore, if a patient being treated with Atelvia should never consume this medicine.
  • Risedronate Sodium 35mg, 150mg Tablets like other bisphosphonates are administered orally. Hence, they may also cause local irritation of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa.
  • Hypocalcemia has been mostly reported in patients taking this medication. Treating hypocalcemia and other disturbances of bone and mineral metabolism before starting this medication is a necessity.
  • Before consuming Risofos for the treatment and prevention of conditions like glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, the sex steroid hormonal status of both men and women should be ascertained and appropriate replacement should be thoroughly considered.

The tablet must be consumed wholly. It should not be chewed, crushed or sucked because it has a potential for causing oropharyngeal irritation or other effects.
