Uses:

Prefilled Anti-D injection/ Rho(D) Immune Globulin (PFS) is a sterilized solution produced form human blood. Individuals those who have Rh in their blood are termed as Rh positive and those who do not have are termed as Rh negative. During blood transfusion or pregnancy if Rh negative is exposed to Rh positive, their body respond by producing antibodies that are intended to destroy Rh positive blood cells. In such cases RhoGAM is prescribed to prevent Rh immunization. If the mother is Rh negative then:

  • Rhophylac should be given to her after delivering Rh positive baby.
  • Preventing Rh immunization at 26 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Bleeding during pregnancy.
  • Ectopic pregnancy.
  • Pregnancy loss.

 

Dosage:

RhoGAM should be administered intramuscularly.

  • If the neonate is Rh-positive- 300 micrograms
  • Ectopic pregnancy- 300 micrograms
  • 26 to 28 weeks of pregnancy- 300 micrograms
  • Blood transfusion- 300 micrograms
  • Abortion/ miscarriage- 300 micrograms

 

Side effects:

Side effects caused by Rhophylacvary from being minor to major. Side effects of the vaccine are:

  • Allergic reactions such as swelling and pain in the area of administration.
  • Formation of anti-D.
  • Fever
  • Back pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • High/ low blood pressure
  • Secretion of haemoglobin in urine
  • Increased bilirubin/ creatinine
  • Decreased haptoglobin levels
  • Weakness
  • Dark coloured urine
  • Symptoms of kidney failure
  • Blood clot
  • Irregular breathing
  • Itching
  • Muscle pain

 

Precautions and measures:

Precautions to be taken while administering Prefilled Anti-D injection/ Rho(D) Immune Globulin (PFS) are:

  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the active ingredients of the vaccine.
  • Doctor should tell the patients about the signs of hypersensitivity reaction, breathing problems and allergic reactions.
  • RhoGAM should not be given to the new born babies.
  • Inform your doctor if you are anaemic as the vaccine can make condition worse.
  • Inform your doctor if you suffer from any kidney problem as the vaccine had been reported to show the signs of kidney failure.
  • Doctors need to monitor the patients for at least 8 hours of administration of the vaccine.
