Metoclopramide 5mg Injection is a GI Prokinetic agent. It belongs to the class of Antiemetic Agent drugs. It is known by the name of Reglan abroad as well as in India. However, it is also known as Vominorm in India.

 

Purpose:

  • Metoclopramide 5mg Injection is used for relief of nausea and vomiting associated with migraine, chemotherapy or radiation, labor, infectious disease, malignant disease, and uremia.
  • Reglan also helps in controlling postoperative vomiting.
  • Small bowel intubation is assisted by this solution.
  • Prevention of motion sickness can also be treated with this.

Mechanism:

Vominorm injection increases the tone and amplitude of gastric contractions. It stimulates motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract without stimulating pancreatic secretions. This results in the resting tone of the lower oesophagal sphincter.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Reglan solution can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly.
  • For children ageing 1-18 years, the recommended dosage is according to their body weight, 0.1 to 0.15 mg/kg, thrice daily through intravenous route. The dosage should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg body weight in 24 hours.
  • The minimum gap interval between 2 doses should be 6 hours even in the case of vomiting.
  • 48 hours is the maximum duration for PONV.
  • 5 days is the maximum duration for CINV
  • In adults, for PONV, a single dose of 10 mg, thrice a day is recommended. For RINV, a single dose of 10 mg is recommended, thrice a day. Maximum dosage is 30 mg or 0.5 mg/kg body wight in 24 hours.
  • In elderly patients, dosage is not fixed and should be taken according to the doctor’s advice strictly.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Metoclopramide 5mg Injection are dizziness, drowsiness, headache, tiredness, trouble sleeping, diarrhea, or flushing.
  • Serious side effects are twisting the neck, tender breasts, mask-like facial expression, muscle spasms, arching back, changes in menstruation in women.
  • In some people, there might be a rise in blood pressure.
  • A serious but rare condition of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome might occur, where you experience muscle stiffness, severe confusion, fever, irregular/fast heartbeat, and sweating.
  • If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, or trouble you, consult your doctor as early as possible.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Inform your doctor about any medical history of dystonia, high blood pressure, blood enzyme problem, liver disease, breast cancer, hole in intestine, tardive dyskinesia, Parkinson’s disease, or pheochromocytoma, before starting with Metoclopramide 5mg Injection.
  • It is not recommended to be given to children below 1 years of age.
  • Prohibit the intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should take Vominorm under the strict guidance of their doctor.
  • Do not indulge in activities that require attention and concentration right after being injected with Vominorm injection.
  • Reglan injection is meant to be injected into your vein.
  • Keep a regular check on your blood pressure.
  • It should be given as a single injection.
  • The product should not be consumed if floating particles are visible in the liquid, the seal is broken, there has been a refrigeration failure, or the liquid is colored.

Do not shake the vial before administration.
