Rifaximin 100mg, 200mg, 550mg Tablets is an antibiotic meant to treat Diarrhea. Each tablet has an active ingredient, Rifaximin, which is a structural analog of rifampin, that helps to cure diarrhea. In India, it is available by the name of Rcifax whereas internationally, it is known by several names such as Xifaxan, Rifacol, and Normix.

Purpose:

  • Rifacol helps to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria
  • The main indication of Rifaximin 100mg, 200mg, 550mg Tablets is to treat a condition developed by noninvasive strains of Escherichia Coli that is the Traveler’s Diarrhea (TD)
  • Rcifax medicine also reduces the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy and cures irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D, in adults.

 

Mechanism:

Xifaxan works by slowing down or completely stopping the growth of E-Coli bacteria and not letting the Traveler’s Diarrhea enter the body. The ammonia-producing bacteria in the body is also killed by these tablets and relieves the body of any muscle problems, confusion, and agitation.

 

Dosage:

  • For patients of Traveler’s Diarrhea: 200 mg, thrice daily, for three days.
  • For patients suffering from Hepatic Encephalopathy: 550 mg, twice a day.
  • For patients suffering from irritable Bowel Syndrome With Diarrhea: 550 mg, thrice a day, for 14 days.

 

Side effects:

  • The most common side effects of Rifaximin 100mg, 200mg, 550mg Tablets are: anemia, abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, muscle spasms, rashes, headache among others.
  • Other side effects of Rcifax are angioneurotic edema, urticaria, anaphylaxis, flushing, pruritus, cramping, mucus in stool, and breathing problems. If any of these effects show up, visit your doctor right away.
  • A serious side effect of Normix is Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, caused due to a type of resistant bacteria.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Rifaximin 100mg, 200mg, 550mg Tablets might interfere with typhoid vaccine, and not produce effective results.
  • Do not get any immunizations or vaccinations done during the tenure of this medication.
  • Pregnant women should only consume it under the strict guidance of their doctor.
  • It is not meant to be given to children under the age of 12 years.
  • There can be red color in your urine due to the consumption of these tablets. Do not mistake it to be blood. This is harmless and normal.
