Live attenuated Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine provides protection against diseases- measles, mumps, and rubella. They are highly contagious viral diseases that spread through the air. Priorix is its brand name by which it is available in India as well as abroad. It is a transparent turbid solution.

Purpose:

Priorix helps in putting off these conditions:

  • The condition which attacks the throat and lungs which causes rash, fever, and runny nose (Measles).
  • The condition where the body experiences fatigue, fever, swelling of salivary glands, and head and muscle aches. There can be inflammation of testicles in men (Mumps).
  • This condition can lead to deafness, heart problems, intellectual disability, and liver and spleen damage. It can be severe if a pregnant woman suffers from it, as it can lead to birth defects (Rubella; German Measles).

 

Mechanism:

Live attenuated Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine is given through subcutaneous route of injection, i.e., just under the skin. It contains weakened viruses which then enter the bloodstream signals the immune system to produce antibodies against them to prevent infection. The antibodies keep a memory of the genetic structure of the antigen which prevents these viruses to cause any infection in the future.

 

Dosage:

  • The recommended dosage for effective results of Priorix is 0.5mL for every age.
  • Children are given two doses of the Live attenuated Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. One at the age of 12 to 15 months and another at 4 to 6 years.
  • Adults should ideally get 2 doses, the second one after one month of the initial dose.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Live attenuated Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine are dizziness, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, sleepiness or sleeplessness, rashes, and itching at the site of injection, nausea, diarrhoea among others.
  • Serious side effects are parotitis, syncope, malaise, vasculitis, diabetes mellitus, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis among others.
  • If any of the effects gets severe at an uncontrollable level, report to your doctor immediately.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Shake well before use as it is a suspension containing an aluminium adjuvant.
  • Needles after use should not be recapped.
  • Special care should be taken to not to intervene in injection into the blood vessel.
  • Physicians should keep a close check on temperature elevation that might occur during the process of vaccination.
  • Patients with thrombocytopenia may even develop a severe condition. Therefore, consult your doctor about the same before receiving this vaccine.

Pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months after getting Priorix.
