Pirfenidone 200mg Tablets are used in the treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension. These are known as Esbriet and Pirespa internationally and in India are available by the name of Pirfenex. It is an off-white hard gelatin tablet available for oral consumption.

 

Purpose:

  • Pirfenidone 200mg Tablets are used to cure Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
  • This medication focuses on improving the condition of your lungs.
  • It treats the condition where it gets difficult to breathe due to the lungs becoming stiff and scarred.

 

Mechanism:

Pirfenidone 200mg Tablets decrease the production of fibrogenic mediators. It works by reducing fibroblast proliferation in an in-vitro system and also helps in the downregulation of procollagens and growth factors.

 

Dosage:

  • As prescribed by your physician/doctor.
  • Esbriet is advised to be consumed thrice daily for effective results.
  • The period for this treatment should be 14 days.
  • Pirespa tablets are meant to be taken only by mouth and should be swallowed.
  • This drug should be swallowed with food.
  • In any condition, patients should not go above the recommended dosage of 2403mg per day.
  • Only one tablet is strictly advised to be consumed at a time.
  • Not to be taken by children under the age of 3 months.

 

Side effects:

  • Tiredness, weight loss, pack of energy, and changes in taste are some common side effects of Pirfenex tablets.
  • Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach ache, or diarrhoea may be experienced, but if the tablet is consumed with food, these side effects may lessen.
  • In very rare cases Pirfenidone 200mg Tablets have been established to cause liver diseases such as drug-induced liver injury or liver enzyme elevations. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Photosensitivity reaction
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

 

Precautions and measures:

  • If you’ve had a history of any kidney disease or treatment such as dialysis or any liver disease, inform it fully to your doctor.
  • It has been established that Pirfenex makes your skin sensitive under the sun, therefore you should always apply sunscreen when going out and be fully clothed.
  • There has been no research on these tablets passing into breast milk, hence should only be consumed by lactating and pregnant women under the guidance of a doctor.
  • Strict measures should be taken with patients who have mild, moderate, or severe renal impairment being treated with this medication.

 

Interactions:

  • Do not consume this drug simultaneously with marijuana or alcohol. This can lead to a lot of dizziness.
  • Medicines such as Phenytoin or Rifampin, and others having the same salt can reduce the effect of Pirfenex.

Smoking should be strictly avoided because it decreases the effect of this medication.
