Levonorgestrel 0.75mg, 1.5mg Tablets are Contraceptives used by women. They belong to the class of Progestins drug. In international pharmacies, it is available by the name of Norlevo and Plan B. In India, it is marketed under the Pill-72 brand name.

 

Purpose:

  • Norlevo is a prescribed tablet used for birth control.
  • It may be put to use after the failure of preventing pregnancy by not having protected sex or using a broken condom.
  • Levonorgestrel 0.75mg, 1.5mg Tablets obstruct the process of ovulation during the menstrual cycle of a woman.
  • This also increases the thickness of vaginal fluid which does not let the sperm reach the egg and block the process of fertilization.
  • Pill-72 prevents the attachment of the fertilized egg by changing the lining of the womb.

 

Mechanism:

It is not effective once implantation has begun or the woman is pregnant. This drug alters the tubal transport of the sperm and closes off the cervix that results in birth control. Because of its progestogenic activity, it produces antigonadotropic effects and therefore suppresses fertility in women.

 

Dosage:

  • Levonorgestrel 0.75mg, 1.5mg Tablets are meant to be swallowed through the mouth.
  • It is advised to take 2 tablets of Plan B at once or 2 tablets at a gap of 12 hours.
  • Consume this medicine within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
  • Girls under the age of 17yrs of age can consume this drug only by prescription.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Pill-72 can be nausea, dizziness, vomiting, breast tenderness, changes in vaginal bleeding, headache, fatigue, vomiting among others.
  • Serious side effects such as severe lower abdominal pain should be reported to the doctor immediately.
  • If dysmenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, or irregular menstruation is experienced, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • This drug is only meant for females.
  • It should only be used as an emergency birth control tablet and not as a regular way of obstructing pregnancy.
  • There are chances of Levonorgestrel 0.75mg, 1.5mg Tablets not being effective in women weighing more than 75kgs. They should talk to the doctor for more insights.
  • Any history of unexplained vaginal bleeding should be informed to the doctor.
  • This medication does not cure sexually transmitted diseases or HIV, and hence should not be consumed to treat such infections.
  • If you’re allergic to Progestins, inform before getting on this medication.

 

Interactions:

Drugs such as Felbamate, Primidone, Nevirapine, Rifampin, Modafinil, Topiramate among others might reduce the effect of Pill-72 tablets.
