Details
Liposomal Amphotericin B 10mg, 25mg, 50mg Injection is an Antifungal agent. It is a lyophilized non-pyrogenic medication meant to be infused into the skin. AmBisome is its international name, whereas in India it is available by the name of Phosome.
Purpose:
- This injection is meant to cure fungal infections.
- Visceral leishmaniasis which is a parasitic disease, and cryptococcal meningitis; a fungal infection caused in the brain and the spinal cord are treated with Liposomal Amphotericin B 10mg, 25mg, 50mg Injection.
- People who are unable to get conventional amphotericin B therapy, are recommended to opt for this drug.
- Phosome slows down the growth of fungi.
Mechanism:
It works by binding the sterol component of the cell membrane that forms a transmembrane channel. It also helps in the binding of the cholesterol component that leads to cytotoxicity.
Dosage:
- As directed by your doctor/physician.
- It can be infused over a period of 2 hours for treating leishmaniasis.
- AmBisome should be infused once daily for treating meningitis.
- It should be directed to the vein only.
- If dropped in between, this injection should be restarted from the lowest dosage.
Side effects:
- Common side effects: headache, chills, dizziness, fever, loss of appetite, fast breathing, shaking, and fast breathing.
- Serious side effects: change in vision, dark urine, blue lips, seizures, black stools, kidney problems among others.
- There’s a rare chance of a serious allergic reaction to Phosome. If this happens, you should consult your doctor right away.
- If there’s an anaphylactic reaction to this injection, discontinue its infusion and visit your doctor.
Precautions and measures:
- If you’ve had a history of heart disease, leukocytes transfusion(white blood cells), kidney disease, or liver disease, inform your doctor before getting on the medication of Liposomal Amphotericin B 10mg, 25mg, 50mg Injection.
- Breastfeeding should not be done if you’re under this treatment.
- If your doctor recommends a special diet, follow it religiously.
- This drug is meant to be administered by a medical professional.
- It has been established that it is safe for the consumption of all individuals, but must be injected with extreme care in young ones and extra elderly people.
Interactions:
- Azole antifungals like Itraconazole and Ketoconazole can react with Phosome.
- Reverse action of the injection can also happen if used along with anti-cancer drugs such as nitrogen mustard or mechlorethamine.
Muscle reactants have also been known to react with Liposomal Amphotericin B 10mg, 25mg, 50mg Injection, hence should be avoided.
