Promethazine HCl 2.5% Injection with brand name Phenergan 2.5% Injection is an antihistamine and antiallergic medicine.

Uses:

Phenergan 2.5% Injection is used to treat allergies. It is yellowish-white tablet that turns blue when exposed to air for long. Various uses of the drug are:

  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)
  • Vasomotor rhinitis (allergy in nose)
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Allergies if skin such as rash, angioedema
  • Controlling nausea and vomiting caused by anaesthesia
  • Sedation prior and after operation
  • Motion sickness

 

Dosage:

Dosage of Promethazine HCl 2.5% Injection differs depending on the type of allergy to be treated. The drug is not advised for children below 2 years of age.

  • Allergy: 25 mg once in a day or 6.5 mg to 12.5 mg three times in a day.
  • Motion sickness- 25 mg twice in a day.
  • Nausea and vomiting- 25 mg once in a day for adults
    • 0.5 mg/ kg for children
  • Sedation- 12.5 to 25 mg for children
    • 25 to 50 mg for adults
  • Before and after operation- 12.5 to 25 mg for children.
    • 50 mg for adults

Side effects caused by Phenergan 2.5% Injection do not require any medical attention but you need to consult your doctor if any of these symptoms cause trouble.

  • Drowsiness
  • Convulsions
  • Dizziness
  • Hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased/ decreased blood pressure
  • Dermatitis

Precautionary measures to be taken before having Phenergan 2.5% Injection are:

  • Consult your doctor if you are allergic to any active ingredients of the drug.
  • The medicine is not recommended for children below 2 years of age. It may cause serious side effects and even fatality.
  • Inform your doctor if you have marrow angles glaucoma or peptic ulcer.
  • Inform you doctor if you are suffering from any liver disorder or high blood pressure.
  • As the drug is not recommended for neonates, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating as the drug passes from the mother to the baby.
  • Avoid alcoholic drink while on the medication as this will make your condition worse.
  • Do not drive or operate heavy machines as the drug causes dizziness and drowsiness.
