Saxagliptin 2.5mg, 5mg Tablets are Antidiabetic agents. Sometimes, it can be used in combination with other diabetes medicines. The universal name of this drug is Onglyza by which it is available in the international pharmacies.

Purpose:

  • Onglyza is used in combination with exercise and diet to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • It prevents serious consequences of diabetes such as blindness or kidney damage.
  • It inhibits the DPP4 Enzyme in the body.

 

Mechanism:

As Saxagliptin 2.5mg, 5mg Tablets are DDP4 Inhibitors, they slow down the inactivation of incretin hormones such as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide and increase their bloodstream concentration.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your physician/doctor.
  • The recommended dosage for effective results is 2.5 mg or 5 mg once daily, with or without food.
  • When this tablet is coadministered with strong cytochrome, a dose of 2.5 mg should be taken once daily.
  • Patients with renal impairment are advised to take 2.5 mg once daily, with or without food.

 

Side effects:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Bullous pemphigoid
  • Hypoglycemia with concomitant use of insulin
  • Severe and disabling arthralgia
  • Pancreatitis
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Other serious side effects of Saxagliptin 2.5mg, 5mg Tablets are swelling of feet, joint pain, skin blisters, sudden weight gain, signs of heart failure.
  • If you experience hypoglycemia, you are also likely to feel increased hunger, sweating, tingling hands, blurred vision, or a fast heartbeat.
  • If you experience any signs of pancreas disease, inform your doctor right away.
  • An allergic reaction to Onglyza is very rare, however, if it occurs, stop taking the tablets.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • If you have had a medical history of pancreatitis, kidney disease, stones in the gallbladder, high levels of fats, or heart failure, inform your doctor before starting with this medication.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar levels.
  • During pregnancy, Saxagliptin 2.5mg, 5mg Tablets should only be used if necessary.
  • If you miss a dose of this drug, take the next dose at the scheduled time and do not double it.
  • These tablets should not be cut, broken, or split.
  • Do not use expired medication.
  • The safety of Onglyza tablets has not been established for pediatric use.
  • Keep it away from kids and pets.
  • Do not increase, decrease or stop the medication at your own ease, without the consultation of your doctor.

 

Interactions:

Beta-blocker medicines such as Propranolol, Glaucoma eye drops, and Metoprolol may obstruct the fast heartbeat during the time of hypoglycemia.
