Details
Esomeprazole 40mg Tablets belong to the category of Antiulcerants and Anti Acidity drugs. They act by decreasing the production of acid in the stomach. It is sold under the brand name Nexium internationally. In India, it is available by the name Neksium.
Uses:
- It is used to treat GERD disorders (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
- It is also used to treat stomach ulcers caused by excessive acid production.
- Nexium is also used to treat heartburns.
How does it work?
Esomeprazole 40mg Tablets is a proton pump inhibitor. So, when the drug is administered into the body it readily acts by inhibiting theĀ H+/K+ ATPase enzyme present in the parietal cells in the lining of the stomach.
Dosage:
- Read the guidelines present on the Esomeprazole 40mg Tablets leaflet before using it.
- The dose of the drug should be administered as directed by the physician. It depends on the patient’s condition, age and type of disorder.
- The dose of the drug is 40 mg once a day through oral administration and is taken before meals.
- If given to children the minimum dose of the drug is 20 mg – 40 mg once a day per 3 weeks or as directed by a physician.
- The effects of the drug are not shown immediately; it takes up to 3 weeks to show its results.
- Even if you don’t see positive results after drug therapy then immediately consult your doctor.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects that occur when you take Neksium tablets are headache, nausea, breathlessness, constipation etc. If they persist for more than 3 weeks then stop the use of the medicines and contact your doctor.
- Osteoporosis may also be experienced if used for a long period of time.
- Tremors, muscle pain, vitamin deficiency mainly of Vitamin B12 may develop due to long term use of the drug.
- Kidney inflammation may occur
Contraindications:
- Neksium is contraindicated to patients having liver infections or inflammations or renal impairment because it can cause harmful side effects.
- A patient who is suffering from osteoporosis is contraindicated to take these medications because this drug weakens bone strength.
- A patient who has a low vitamin B12 level in the body is contraindicated for the use of Esomeprazole 40mg tablets.
- If a person is infected with Clostridium bacteria and having continuous diarrhoea, should avoid this drug.
- A person with low magnesium in the body should avoid this drug.
- Do let your physician know about your medical history or if you are on any other medical therapy before beginning the treatment with these tablets.
Interactions:
Neksium is interacted with several drugs and causes toxicity. So, avoid using this medication when you are having Methotrexate, Warfarin, Clopidogrel, Rifampin, Diazepam etc.
