Levonorgestrel 52 mg Intrauterine System (IUS) with brand name Mirena 52 mg is a contraceptive. It belongs to class of drugs known as progestins.

Uses:

Mirena 52 mg is small, flexible device that is placed in the uterus of women. Its various uses are:

• To prevent pregnancy (used as a birth control method).
• For the treatment of heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle in women.

 

Dosage:

Levonorgestrel 52 mg Intrauterine System (IUS) consists of a T-shaped polyethylene frame and a reservoir. This reservoir consists of mixture of 52 mg of levonorgestrel and silicone.

Initially LNG is released at the rate of 20 mcg/day. This dosage is decreased to 10 mcg/day after five years and then to 9 mcg/day after six years.

• When used for contraception, Mirena 52 mg should be applied for six years. After that it should be removed or replaced as desired.
• When used for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding, it should be removed after five years.

 

Side effects:

Levonorgestrel 52 mg Intrauterine System (IUS) is effective in birth control but it may cause serious side effects such as:

• Severe pelvic pain
• Heavy vaginal bleeding
• Dizziness/ lightheadedness
• Severe migraine
• Pain during intercourse
• Weakness
• Fever/ chills
• Numbness
• Confusion
• Vaginal convulsions
• Discharge with foul smell
• Blurred vision
• Jaundice
• Sensitivity to light
• Irregular menstrual cycle
• Allergies such as swelling in face and lips
• Mood swings
• Nausea
• Back/ stomach pain
• Bloating
• Tender breast and pain in breast
• Weight gain

 

Precautions and measures:

Levonorgestrel 52 mg Intrauterine System (IUS) is inserted for long duration in the cervix, thus precautions should be taken while using it.

• Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the active ingredients of progestins.
• Inform your doctor if you have migraine as the device may elevate the symptoms.
• If the device is placed and then pregnancy occurs, remove the device as this increases the risk of septic abortion.
• Inform your doctor if you are suffering or have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease as the insertion of device may increase pelvic infection causing pain.
• Let your doctor know if you have/ had breast cancer.
