Calcitonin 200IU Nasal Spray is used for treating Osteoporosis. It is a calcitonin receptor agonist. This spray acts primarily on bone, but actions on the gastrointestinal tract and direct renal effects are also observed. Miacalcic is the universal name of this nasal spray by which it is available in all pharmacies.

Purpose:

• Calcitonin 200IU Nasal Spray treats bone disease in women who are at least 5 years past menopause and can not intake estrogen-based products.
• Calcitonin hormone prevents the breakdown of bones and helps in increasing the density of them.
• It can also be used in the early treatment of hypercalcemia emergencies.
• Symptomatic Paget’s Disease

Dosage:

• For symptomatic Paget’s disease: 100 International Units per day.
• For Hypercalcemia patients: 4 International Units every 12 hours. If the response is not satisfactory, it can be increased to every 8 hours.
• For osteoporosis patients: 100 International Units per day.
• For calcium and vitamin D supplement: 400 International Units once every day.

Side effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, diarrhea, headache, runny nose, hot flashes, nosebleed among others are common side effects of Calcitonin 200IU Nasal Spray.
• Adverse side effects of Miacalcic are hypertension, polyuria, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, seizures, convulsions, bronchospasm, visual disturbances, and arthralgia.
• Skin reactions such as urticaria can also show up by the usage of this nasal spray. If any of the above-mentioned effects are experienced, consult your physician immediately before the situation worsens.

Precautions and measures:

• Always keep your head up while using Miacalcic spray.
• Use the opposite nostril every day.
• If you’re allergic to calcitonin salmon, inform your doctor about the same before getting on this medication.
• As it is a nasal spray, it is meant for use only via the nose and not the mouth.
• Include a good amount of calcium and vitamin D in your diet.
• Always close the cap tightly after use.
• Do not flush or pour it down the sink when it gets finished.
• Do not share your Calcitonin 200IU Nasal Spray with anyone.
• If you have had a history of low calcium levels in the blood, inform your doctor.
• This medication is meant for women who have had menopause and is not advised to be consumed by pregnant or lactating women.
• If the spray by mistake gets into your eyes, wash them thoroughly with cold water for 15 minutes.

Interactions:

Lithium is one product that can interfere with the activity of Miacalcic and cause negative results in the body.
