Mometasone furoate 50mcg puff nasal spray,  100 metered doses are Antiasthmatic agents. It is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. Asmanex is the international brand name of this drug. Whereas, in India, it is known by the name Metaspray or Momeflo or Aquamet.

 

Purpose:

  • Mometasone furoate 50mcg puff nasal spray, 100 metered doses are indicated for the treatment of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis and the prophylaxis of seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults, adolescents, and children between the ages of 3 and 11 years.
  • It is also used in treatment for acute episodes of sinusitis in adults and adolescents of 12 years and above.

 

Mechanism:

Asmanex has effects on multiple cell types such as neutrophils, mast cells, macrophages, eosinophils, and lymphocytes and on mediators such as cytokines, histamine, leukotrienes, and eicosanoids, involved in the process of inflammation.

 

Dosage:

  • Use Metaspray strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage for effective results is two sprays in each nostril, once a day.
  • If the symptoms are seen to be adequately controlled, the dose of Aquamet can be reduced to one spray in each nostril, once a day.
  • If the symptoms increase, the dose of Momeflo can be increased to four sprays in each nostril, once daily.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Mometasone furoate 50mcg puff nasal spray, 100 metered doses are headache, viral infection, pharyngitis, coughing, sinusitis, dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea.
  • Serious side effects of Metaspray are immunosuppression, glaucoma, and cataracts, epistaxis, ulcerations, Candida albicans infection, impaired wound healing, Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis effects, including growth reduction.
  • Rare side effects of Aquamet are vision problems, swelling of feet, blood-tinged mucus, increased urination, and trouble breathing.

Precautions and measures:

  • If you have had a medical history of cataracts, glaucoma, tuberculosis, herpes eye infection, ulcers, or any recent surgery, inform your doctor about the same, before starting with Mometasone furoate 50mcg puff nasal spray, 100 metered doses.
  • In unlikely cases, due to the prolonged use of Aquamet, the child’s growth might be hindered.
  • Metaspray should not be used in the presence of untreated localized infection involving the nasal mucosa.
  • Patients suffering from untreated fungal, bacteria, systemic viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex should use the Momeflo drug under the strict guidance of their doctor.
  • Use of excessive doses may suppress the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis function.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should only use Momeflo drug if prescribed by the doctor.

 

Interactions:

Patients with a history of recurrent nasal bleeding or hemorrhagic diathesis should not undergo this medication, as it will only worsen the condition.
