Mesalamine (Mesalazine) 400mg, 800mg Tablets are GI Prokinetic Agents. It belongs to the class of drugs called 5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivatives. It is known by the name Apriso or Pentasa in international pharmacies. In India, it is known by the name Mesacol.

 

Purpose:

  • Pentasa tablets are used to treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis.
  • The maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s ileocolitis in adults is done with the help of this drug.

 

Mechanism:

Mesalamine (Mesalazine) 400mg, 800mg Tablets follow a topical method of working. It is an aminosalicylate that suppresses the prostaglandins which cause swelling and inflammation in the intestines. This results in a reduction of stomach pain, bleeding, and ulceration, and prevents future flare-ups of the disease.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage of Apriso for mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis for effective results is two 400 mg, thrice, daily, for 6 weeks.
  • For the maintenance of remission, 3 tablets of 800 mg, once a day, for 4 weeks.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Mesalamine (Mesalazine) 400mg, 800mg Tablets are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, and stomachache.
  • Serious side effects of Mesacol tablets are dark urine, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, shortness of breath, renal impairment, acute intolerance syndrome, hepatic failure, hypersensitivity reactions, peripheral edema, pruritus, malaise, increased lipase, agranulocytosis aplastic anemia, eosinophilia, gout, interstitial nephritis among others.
  • Ulcerative colitis might worsen in some cases if the medication doesn’t suit.

Precautions and measures:

  • Regular monitoring of liver and kidney functions might happen by your doctor during the tenure of Mesalamine (Mesalazine) 400mg, 800mg Tablets.
  • If you’re allergic to aminosalicylates, salicylates, sulfasalazine, or have had any blood disorder in the past, this drug is not meant for you.

Interactions:

Dichlorphenamide is a product that might interact with Mesacol tablets and produce negative effects.
