Meropenem 500mg, 1000mg Injection is an antibacterial agent. It is meant for intravenous administration. The universal names by which this drug is known are Meronem and Carbonem.

Purpose:

Meropenem 500mg, 1000mg Injection is indicated for certain conditions:

  • Septicemia
  • Meningitis
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Gynaecological infections
  • Postpartum infections
  • Empiric treatment
  • Polymicrobial infections

 

Mechanism:

Carbonem injection penetrates the cell wall of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It inhibits cell wall synthesis. Thus, this results in the blockage of the growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in the body.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage of Meronem for effective results is 500 mg, every 8 hours for skin and akin structure infections, and renal impairment patients.
  • The recommended dosage for kids is 10-40 mg, every 8 hours.
  • The dosage also depends on your age, weight, current health conditions, and response to the treatment.

 

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Meronem are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, blurred vision, and headache.
  • Serious side effects are chest pain, abdominal pain, dark urine, seizures, confusion, easy bruising, yellowing of skin or eyes, unusual fatigue, and persistent signs of infection such as cold, cough, etc.
  • A very rare condition that can be shown and is dangerous is Clostridium Difficile.
  • Prolonged use of Meropenem 500mg, 1000mg Injection can result in vaginal yeast or fungal infection, oral thrush, or any other bacterial infection.
  • An allergic reaction to this drug is extremely rare. However, if any of the symptoms get worse, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Limit your consumption of alcohol and marijuana.
  • During pregnancy, Meronem Injection should be used only if necessarily needed.
  • Do not freeze it.
  • Do not use it if it is an expired medication.
  • Original syringes should be protected from light.
  • The prefilled syringe is meant for use and throws purpose.
  • Do not twist or turn the cap of the syringe, rather snap it off.
  • Do not wipe the needle when not needed.
  • Use proper aseptic injection technique.
  • Live bacterial vaccines such as the typhoid vaccine might not be effective during the tenure of this medication.
  • It has been established that Meropenem 500mg, 1000mg Injection passes into breast milk. In small amounts, therefore consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol.

 

Interactions:

  • It can result in false reports of diabetic urine testing products therefore should be preferred to get it done after the tenure of injection is over.

Products like Imipenem and Cefoxitin can negatively react with this injection.
