Drug Name: Artemether 20mg + Lumefantrin 120mg Tablets
Details
Artemether 20mg + Lumefantrin 120mg Tablets are Antimalarial agents. This drug belongs to the class of Antimalarials. The active ingredients in this drug are artemether and lumefantrine. Coartem is the international name of this drug. However, in India, it is available by the name Lumether.
Purpose:
- These tablets are indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated, acute malaria infections in patients of 5 kg body weight and above.
- It only obstructs the symptoms of malaria and does not prevent malaria.
Mechanism:
The two antiparasitic medicines present in Coartem drug, treat malaria. The levels of heme are increased in the blood, which is toxic to malarial parasites. This resource is the death of parasites and stops the infection from multiplying.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- People above the age of 16 years, and weighing more than 35 kgs should follow a course of 3 days, 4 tablets of Lumether, twice daily.
- The recommended dosage of Artemether 20mg + Lumefantrin 120mg Tablets for adolescents, below the age of 16 years is 3 tablets twice daily, for 3 days.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of this drug nausea, vomiting, headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, stomachache, joint pain, muscle pain, loss of appetite, weakness, and diarrhea.
- Serious side effects of Lumether tablets are splenomegaly, vertigo, nasopharyngitis, abdominal pain, pyrexia, asthenia, hepatomegaly, arthralgia among others.
- If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, or bother you, consult your doctor as early as possible.
Precautions and measures:
- Wear covered and light-coloured clothing whenever outdoors.
- Use insect repellent sprays, creams, or stickers to avoid getting bit by mosquitoes.
- Artemether 20mg + Lumefantrin 120mg Tablets should be consumed with drinks or food rich in fat.
- Take another dose if you vomit within an hour of taking the tablet.
- If you have had a medical history of liver disease, kidney or heart problems, inform your doctor before starting with Lumether medication.
- If you’ve recently used quinine, halofantrine, or quinidine, inform your doctor about the same.
- Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
- Do not crush, break, or split the tablets.
- The safety of this drug has not been established in children under the age of 10 years.
Interactions:
Some drugs can affect the QT Prolongation, if used along with Artemether 20mg + Lumefantrin 120mg Tablets such as Ciprofloxacin, Erythromycin, Ziprasidone, Sotalol, Moxifloxacin, Ketoconazole, Efivarenz, Rifabutin, Delavirdine among others.
