Clarithromycin 500 mg tablets available by brand names Biaxin 500 mg tablets (international) and Klacid 500 mg tablets (national) belongs to the class macrolides

Uses:

Biaxin 500 mg tablets works by killing and inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The drug only works for bacteria. It is not effective for any other micro-organism. Its various uses are:

• For the treatment of bacterial infections.
• For the treatment of stomach ulcers in combination with other drugs

 

Dosage:

Dosage of Klacid 500 mg tablets vary depending upon the type of infection to be treated and age and weight of the patient.

• Chronic bronchitis- 250-500 mg given orally in every 12 hours for 7-14 days (maximum dosage 1000 mg for 7 days).
• Acute maxillary sinusitis- 500 mg given orally in every 12 hours for 14 days (maximum dosage 1000 mg for 14 days).
• Mycobacterial infection- 500 mg given orally in every 12 hours for 7-14 days.
• Prophylaxis- 7.5 mg/kg given orally in every 12 hours.
• Peptic ulcer- 500 mg given orally in every 8-12 hours for 10-14 days.
• Tonsillitis- 250 mg given orally in every 12 hours for 10 days.

 

Side effects:

Side effects caused by Clarithromycin 500 mg tablets are minor. Major symptoms are experienced by few. Side effects caused by the medicine are-

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Change of taste
• Diarrhoea
• Increased level of urea in blood
• Headache
• Appetite loss
• Allergies such as rash, troubled breathing
• Anxiety
• Dizziness
• Hallucinations
• Jaundice
• Increased heart rate
• Seizures
• Increased levels of amino aspartate and bilirubin in blood
• Pain in upper stomach

• Do not get vaccinated if you are on this medication or tell your doctor if you have been recently vaccinated as the drug may interact with the vaccine not letting it to work properly.
• Inform your doctor if you pregnant or lactating as the drug is harmful for foetus and new born.
• If you have a condition of muscle weakness, inform your doctor beforehand as the drug can make your condition worse.
