Irbesartan 150mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg Tablets belong to the class of Angiotensin Receptor Blockers. It is known by the name of Avalide internationally. In India, it is known by the name Irovel – H. This is a combination of two medicines Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, respectively.
Purpose:
- Avalide tablets are indicated to treat hypersensitivity (high blood pressure).
- It lowers the risk of strokes in patients with an enlarged heart.
- It is also used in the treatment of heart failure, renal protection in type 2 diabetic patients with proteinuria, and reducing cardiovascular morbidity.
Mechanism:
Irovel – H tablets and their active metabolite block the aldosterone-secreting and vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin. It allows easy and smooth flow of blood to all organs inside the body, by relaxing the blood vessels. Being a water pill, it allows the body to make more urine, and get rid of extra water and salt from the body.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- It is taken by mouth either after having a meal or an empty stomach.
- The dosage of these tablets depends on your medical condition and response to the treatment.
- If you are also taking drugs to lower your cholesterol, take this at least 4 to 6 hours before or after that medication.
- Take this medication regularly at the same time to get the most benefit of it.
- The recommended dosage of Irbesartan 150mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg Tablets for effective results is 1 tablet, once daily.
- Some patients might receive an additional benefit by increasing the dose to 100 mg, once daily.
- In patients with heart failure, should take 12.5 mg once daily.
- In patients with Type 2 diabetes should take 50 mg once daily.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Irovel – H tablets are nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sleepiness, lightheadedness, diarrhea, and fever.
- Serious side effects of Irbesartan 150mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg Tablets are anemia, depression, somnolence, paresthesia, migraine, vertigo, tinnitus, urticaria, impotence, edema, dyspnea, atrial fibrillation, syncope, and sleep disorders.
- If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, consult your doctor right away.
Precautions and measures:
- In patients being treated with a high dose of diuretics along with Irbesartan 150mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg Tablets, might face symptomatic hypotension.
- If you have had a medical history of liver disease, or dehydration, inform your doctor before starting with this medication.
- Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
- Do not crush, break, or split the tablet.
- Do not use expired medication.
- Store them at room temperature.
- Keep them away from kids and pets.
- Do not increase or decrease the dosage at your own ease.
- Get regular tests of creatinine, urea, and potassium in your blood.
- Rise slowly if you’ve been lying or sitting for quite a long time.
- Pregnant women should avoid this medication in their second or third trimesters.
Interactions:
Drugs that can interact with Irovel – H tablets and produce negative effects are Aliskiren, Benazepril, Lithium, Drospirenone, and Lisinopril. Hence, they should be avoided.
