Indinavir 100mg, 200mg, 400mg Capsules are Antiviral agents. They are formulated as a sulfate salt, belonging to the class of protease inhibitors. Crixivan is the international brand name of this drug. However, in India, it is known as Indivan.

 

Purpose:

  • Indinavir 100mg, 200mg, 400mg Capsules inhibit Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
  • It helps in better functioning of the immune system.
  • It also lowers the chances of getting new infections or cancer.

Mechanism:

Crixivan tablets bind to the protease active site and inhibit the activity of HIV-1 protease enzymes. This results in the formation of immature harmless and non-infectious viral particles.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage of Indivan for effective results is 600 mg, daily. The dosage can be broken down into 100 mg doses each.
  • Tablets should be given with food only.
  • Children under the age of 12 years, should only be given this medicine, after consultation from the doctor.

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Indinavir 100mg, 200mg, 400mg Capsules are nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, sleepiness, lightheadedness, vomiting, and fatigue.
  • Other side effects can be back pain, anemia, jaundice, headache, cough, and rash.
  • Serious side effects of Indivan tablets are dysuria, taste perversion, urolithiasis, somnolence, anorexia, acid regurgitation, and dyspepsia.
  • If any of the above-mentioned effects persist for long, consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions and measures:

  • To decrease the risk of spreading HIV to others, use protection while sexual intercourse, and do not share toothbrushes, syringes, or razors.
  • If you’ve got an upset stomach, take the medicine with tea, coffee, or apple juice.
  • To decrease the risk of kidney stones while being available on medication of Indivan, drink at least 6 glasses of water every day.
  • Do not increase or decrease the dosage at your own ease.
  • If you have had a medical history of coronary heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, hemophilia, or high blood fat levels, inform your doctor before starting with this treatment.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should discuss the risks and benefits of the baby with their doctor.
  • Prohibit intake of alcohol and marijuana.
  • Keep a regular check on your liver function.
  • Do not crush, break, or split the capsules.
  • Do not use expired medication.
  • Store them at room temperature.

 

Interactions:

Certain drugs that can interact with Indinavir 100mg, 200mg, 400mg Capsules and produce negative effects are Pimozide, Rifampin, Eletriptan, Atazanavir, Amiodarone, Lovastatin, Simvastatin, St John’s Wort, Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, and Primidone.
