Isosorbide 5, mononitrate Tablets are nitrates used to treat angina (chest) pain. It is present worldwide by the name of Imdur. A Vasodilator is an organic nitrate present in this drug, which is active in both arteries and veins.

 

Purpose:

  • This medication is taken by people suffering from a heart condition called coronary artery disease.
  • It relaxes and widens the blood vessels so that flow of blood becomes easier towards the heart.
  • The first consumption of this medicine is not rapidly effective and hence needs to be carried on for positive improvement.

 

Dosage:

  • The recommended dosage of Imdur is one tablet of 20mg daily, twice a day.
  • There should be a 7 hours gap in between the two dosages.
  • Adjustment for hepatic and renal impairment patients is not required as such.
  • The visible effect can be sensed after one hour of taking the tablet.

 

Side effects:

  • Neurological: insomnia, nightmares, confusion, increased appetite among others
  • Respiratory side effects of Isosorbide 5, mononitrate Tablets: pneumonia and bronchitis.
  • Urinary frequency and dysuria are some genitourinary side effects of this medication.
  • Headache and dizziness are very common side effects and if they persist for long, you should consult your doctor right away.

Precautions and measures:

  • Amplification of Isosorbide 5, mononitrate Tablets can result in hypotension.
  • If it is used in conditions of heart problems it should be consumed with awareness.
  • It has been established that it is excreted in breast milk and hence should be consumed by lactating mothers only after knowing the risks and benefits from the doctor.
  • If you’re allergic to similar drugs like nitroglycerin or isosorbide dinitrate, this medication is not meant for you.
  • If you generally have low blood pressure, inform your doctor about the same so that he/she can adjust your dosage accordingly.

 

Interactions:

  • Drugs used to treat pulmonary hypertension or erectile dysfunction such as riociguat, tadalafil and sildenafil have the possibility to react with Imdur.
  • Isosorbide 5, mononitrate Tablets should not be taken along with Isosorbide dinitrate.
  • False test results might result in cholesterol levels as this medication can interfere with some laboratory tests.
  • The use of arterial vasoconstrictors or epinephrine can cause harm and hence should be avoided.

 

Storage:

  • These tablets should be stored between 20°C and 25°C of temperature.
  • Imdur tablets should be kept away from moisture, light, and dampness.
  • Keep it away from pets and children.
