Hepatitis A Vaccine is used to help prevent this infection in humans. It fights against cirrhosis, liver cancer among others to stop disease-causing microbes from entering the human body. It is available under the brand name Havrix all over the world.

Purpose:

  • This vaccine helps in preventing inflammation of the liver, yellowing of eyes and skin (jaundice), and vomiting.
  • Havrix boosts the immune system towards the Hepatitis A virus and not getting attacked by it.

 

Mechanism:

This infection can start from mild or no symptoms at an initial stage and result in death. Hepatitis A Vaccine is made from whole and dead Hepatitis A virus which is injected in the body. This then activates antibodies against the Hepatitis A virus and doesn’t let the foreign organisms enter into the body.

Getting in contact with the stool of an infected person with this virus is the source of developing this infection.

 

Dosage:

  • Havrix is specially meant for people who travel in areas prone to Hepatitis A infection, sex workers, laboratory workers, daycare workers, drug users, or people having multiple sex partners.
  • 2 injections are given at a gap of 6-18 months to people before the age of 12 months.

 

Side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Arm pain
  • Vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • If you experience a high fever within a few days of getting this vaccine done, inform your doctor.
  • Serious side effects such as swelling, redness, tenderness, loss of appetite, or vision changes occur, report to your doctor immediately.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Always shake the syringe well before use.
  • Do not mix this Hepatitis A Vaccine with the syringe of any other vaccine.
  • Caps of prefilled syringes contain rubber latex, which can be a source of an allergic reaction.
  • Keep it away from kids and pets.
  • The injection should be administered under the skin or into a muscle.
  • It may not provide full protection to each of the people getting this done.
  • Havrix is meant for people only above the age of 1.
  • Once the syringe bottle is decapped, it should be used there and then.
  • Do not use the containers of syringes for any other storage purposes.

 

Interactions:

  • Any previous consumption of steroids can lessen the effect of the Hepatitis A Vaccine.
  • Medicines used to treat organ transplant rejection can react with this vaccine.

Patients who were or currently are on the medication of psoriasis, an autoimmune disorder, arthritis, or rheumatoid should only consume this vaccine under the strict guidance of the doctor.
