Acarbose 25mg, 50mg Tablets belong to the category of Antidiabetic drugs. It may be used as a combination therapy. The international name by which these tablets are available worldwide is Glucobay.
Uses
Glucobay is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by lowering and balancing the blood sugar level.
How does it work?
Acarbose 25mg, 50mg Tablets belong to the alpha-glucosidase inhibitors class of drugs. It slows down the action of certain enzymes that break down food into sugars. Because of this, the digestion of carbohydrates slows down and prevent your blood sugar level from rising high after you eat.
Dosage
- Glucobay’s dosage depends on several factors such as age, condition, severity of the condition, etc.
- Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor.
- The recommended dosage for adults ageing 18 years or above- 25 mg thrice a day with the first bite of each main meal.
Side effects
Glucobay is known to cause several side effects in patients.
Common side effects-
- stomach pain
- diarrhoea
- flatulence (gas)
Severe side effects-
- Allergic skin reaction. Symptoms- rash, redness, swelling of your skin
- Liver problems. Symptoms- yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin, stomach swelling, pain in the upper right portion of your stomach
- Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Symptoms- diarrhoea, mucus discharge, rectal bleeding, constipation
Precautions
- Consumption of alcohol may increase the risk of increasing as well as decreasing your blood sugar level surprisingly. So, talk to your doctor before having alcohol.
- People suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, should not consume Acarbose 25mg, 50mg Tablets. If you experience symptoms such as- dry mouth or extreme thirst, high blood glucose levels, frequent urination, vomiting, etc., call your doctor immediately.
- People suffering from liver cirrhosis or other liver disorders must not take this medication as it may worsen the condition.
- Patients who take sulfonylurea or insulin should not take these tablets as it may increase the risk of developing low blood sugar.
- The drug has not shown any damage to the foetus of a pregnant woman but consultation with a doctor is necessary before taking it.
- Breastfeeding women should talk to their doctor if they want to breastfeed the child or not as this drug may pass into the breastmilk.
If you have any intestinal problems such as inflammatory bowel disease, or partial intestinal obstruction, colonic ulceration, or if you’re predisposed to intestinal obstruction, then Acarbose 25mg, 50mg Tablets may worsen your condition.
