Valacyclovir 500mg Tablets belong to the category of antivirals and are used to treat a wide range of viral infections. This drug may also be used as a combination therapy. These tablets are also available under the brand name Valtrex internationally and in India, these are called Genvir.

Uses

• Valtrex is used to treat several viral infections caused by the herpes simplex viruses (a group of viruses).
• It can treat viral infections like oral herpes, genital herpes, shingles, chickenpox, etc.

 

How does it work?

Valacyclovir 500mg Tablets work by inhibiting the multiplication of herpes viruses in the body. Though it does not cure herpes permanently, it may delay the infection’s comeback.

 

Dosage

• The dosage of this drug depends on the patient’s age, condition, severity, other medication conditions, etc.
• Take Genvir as prescribed by your doctor.
• The recommended dosage for oral herpes- For patients ageing 12 to 64 years, 1 g twice for a day, at least 12 hours apart.
• The recommended dosage for genital herpes- For patients ageing 18 to 64 years, 500 mg to 1 g twice per day, at least 12 hours apart for 10 days.
• The recommended dosage for shingles- For patients ageing 18 to 64 years, 1 g thrice per day for 7 days.
• The recommended dosage for chickenpox- For patients ageing 18 to 64 years, 1 g thrice per day for 7 days.
• It has not been proven safe for children ageing below 12 years and adults above 65 years of age. Only in severe conditions, the doctor prescribes Valacyclovir 500mg Tablets to them.

 

Side effects

Genvir drug is known to have side effects ranging from mild to severe.

• nausea
• vomiting
• dizziness
• pain in your stomach area

Severe side effects

• kidney failure
• aggressive behaviour
• unsteady or shaky movements
• confusion
• hallucinations
• seizures
• coma

 

Precautions

• Genvir drug is known to cause severe allergic reactions. That is why it is necessary to inform your doctor if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
• It is not prescribed to people suffering from any kidney disease as the kidneys won’t be able to clear it out of the body causing severe side effects including kidney failure.
• If you are breastfeeding, let your doctor know, as this drug may pass into the breastmilk and cause serious side effects in the child.
