Details

Fluoxetine 20mg, 40mg capsules, also known as Prozac worldwide is a prescription medicine used to treat depression. In India, it is available under the brand name Fludac.

Uses

Prozac oral capsule is used to treat the following conditions:

• Depression
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder
• Bulimia nervosa
• Panic attacks

How does it work?

• These oral capsules belong to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They are mostly used to treat similar conditions.
• Fluoxetine 20mg, 40mg capsules work by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin helps in maintaining mental health balance. An increment in serotonin level helps to treat symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, bulimia nervosa, and panic attacks.

Dosage

• You should read the Medication Guide properly provided by your pharmacist before you start using Fluoxetine 20mg, 40mg capsules and every time you get a refill. If you have any questions, asking your doctor is necessary.
• Take Fludac as directed by your doctor, usually once in a day. If you are taking this medication twice a day then your doctor may direct you to take it in the morning and at noon.
• If you take Fluoxetine 20mg, 40mg capsules for premenstrual problems or other menstrual problems, your doctor may direct you to take it daily of the month or also for the 2 weeks before your period.

Side effects

Common side effects: strange dreams, decreased sex drive and trouble having an orgasm, decreased appetite, dry mouth, indigestion, flu, erectile dysfunction , trouble sleeping, sore throat, rash, watery nasal discharge, sweating and hot flashes, tremors, anxiety and nervousness, weakness, diarrhea, etc.

Serious side effects

• Serotonin syndrome: Symptoms can include: agitation, hallucinations, problems with coordination, racing heart rate, overactive reflexes, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
• Abnormal bleeding like bruising or bleeding more easily than normal.
• Mania like a greatly increased energy or any other severe trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, excessive happiness, talking more or faster than normal.
• Reckless behavior, unusually grand ideas.
• Low salt levels in your blood. Symptoms can include: headache, weakness, confusion.

Important warnings

• Fludac can cause a severe allergic reaction like hives, rash alone or with a fever and joint pain, trouble breathing, swelling of your throat or tongue, etc.
• For people with diabetes, this may affect low blood sugar levels. Once you stop taking this medicine, it may cause your blood sugar levels to increase.

For people with bipolar I disorder: You shouldn’t take Fludac alone to treat depression associated with bipolar I disorder. It may increase your risk of a mixed or manic episode.
