Thyroxine Sodium 50Mcg, 100Mcg Tablets are used to treat hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroxine in the body) which results in delayed body metabolism. These tablets are used to increase the production of Thyroxine in the body. It is sold under the brand name Eltroxin in India. It is also known by the names Eltroxin and Synthroid all over the world.

Uses:

• Synthroid tablets are used in the treatment of goitres caused due to low thyroxine level and it also treats thyroid cancer.
• It is also used to treat infertility only if it is due to hypothyroidism.

 

How does it work?

Hypothalamus secretes the thyrotropin-releasing hormone. So, when Thyroxine Sodium 50Mcg, 100Mcg tablets are administered into the body it acts by stimulating the anterior pituitary gland to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) which in turn produces thyroid hormones T4 and T3 to increase the levels of thyroid hormone.

 

Dosage:

• Do consult your doctor before taking this medication.
• Do read out all the instructions present on the tablet leaflet or patient information leaflet (PIL).
• The dose of the drug depends upon the patient’s medical condition and also on his age, gender, etc.,
• The minimum dose is about 50Mcg which may change depending on the condition of the patient.
• Eltroxin tablets are taken without food and 1 hour before the meal through the oral route.
• Don’t crush the tablet or chew it. Swallow the medication wholly.
• It takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks to show the results.
• Use the medication regularly for having better and fast response and consult your doctor before you stop using medication.

 

Side effects:

• Thyroxine Sodium 50Mcg, 100Mcg Tablets show common symptoms which include dizziness, sweating, tiredness, unexpected weight gain, diarrhoea, etc.
• If you have serious palpitations, angina pain, swelling in the body, seizures, etc., then do stop the use of this medication and consult your doctor.
• Serious allergic reactions may be observed such as itching in the throat, and rashes that may require immediate medical help.

 

Contraindications:

• Do let your doctor know if you have any kind of allergic reactions due to Eltroxin tablets so that he can alter your medications.
• The studies suggest that there are no complications in pregnancy while taking these medications but it is necessary to tell your doctor so that he can adjust the dose.
• There are no clinical studies that prove that this drug shows any effects on infants. Therefore, consult your physician if you are a lactating mother.
• Do let your doctor know if you have diabetes because these medicines may affect your blood sugar levels. You need to be monitored thoroughly by the doctor until you are using Thyroxine Sodium 50Mcg, 100Mcg tablets.
• It should be avoided or used with full precautions if you have any cardiovascular disease.

Children should be continuously monitored as they may show adverse drug reactions.
