Details
Dutasteride 0.5mg Tablets is a drug popularly known as Avodart used for the treatment of prostate hyperplasia which means enlargement of prostate glands. These tablets are often used in a combination with other drugs such as Tamsulosin, an alpha-receptor analogue. It is popularly known as Dutas in India.
Uses:
- It is used in the treatment of alopecia and enlarged prostate.
- It is also used to treat urinary bladder problems which are in the first stage.
How does it work?
Dutasteride 0.5mg Tablets is a competitive 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. So, when the drug is administered into the body it acts by inhibiting the enzymes of 5 alpha-reductase (type1 and type2) resulting in a decrease of DHT in the body and shows its effects.
Dosage:
- The dose is administered as directed by the physician.
- The recommended dose of Dutas tablet is about 0.5mg.
- It is a soft gelatin capsule and should not be chewed or crushed. It must be consumed wholly.
- It can be taken on an empty stomach or after having a meal too.
- There is no need for dose adjustments because of its long half-life.
Side effects:
- The common side effects of the drug Dutasteride 0.5mg Tablets are headache and Stomach upset but if they become unbearable then you need to consult the doctor.
- Other side effects include dizziness, Nausea, menstruation discomfort etc.,
- There are some changes observed in men due to Dutas tablet, for example, gynecomastia.
- It has a risk of prostate cancer but there are no proper studies about it. Even though the researchers suggest early detection of cancer.
- Sexual dysfunction in men is observed. e.g., impotency and reduced libido.
- Frequent urination can occur due to prolonged use of the drug.
- Cardiovascular disorders such as angina, M.I.
Contraindications:
- Avodart is severely contraindicated in pregnancy because it can cause harmful effects to the foetus.
- It should be avoided by patients who have any kind of hypersensitivity reactions.
- You should also consult your doctor if you have an allergy with the drug Dutasteride 0.5mg Tablets
- The patients having severe liver disorders, cirrhosis of the liver etc., then the medication is contraindicated because it may be fatal.
- Patients who are undergoing this treatment should be monitored carefully for any cardiac arrest.
Dutas tablet should not be given to children as the safety and efficacy of the medicine for children is not known.
