Medroxyprogesterone 150mg Injection is a female hormone. It is a hormone replacement therapy consisting of Progesterones and Oestrogens. It obstructs and prevents the growth of an egg, the process is known as ovulation, during the menstrual cycle of a woman. This drug is universally known as Depo-Provera.

Purpose:

  • Treatment of secondary amenorrhea.
  • Hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathologies, such as uterine cancer or fibroids can lead to abnormal uterine bleeding which is treated by Medroxyprogesterone 150mg Injection.
  • It is also used for postmenopausal women who are being treated with oral conjugated estrogens 0.625 mg tablets to prevent endometrial hyperplasia.
  • It helps in the prevention of sperm reaching the egg (fertilization) by making the vaginal fluid thicker.

 

Dosage:

  • For contraception: 150 mg subcutaneously every 3 months.
  • For endometriosis: 104 mg subcutaneously every 3 months.
  • For paraphilia: 100-600 mg weekly.
  • First Medroxyprogesterone 150mg Injection should be given during the first 5 days of the menstrual cycle.

 

Side effects:

  • Acne
  • Delayed ejaculation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Melasma
  • Influenza
  • Bloating
  • Stomach cramps
  • Vaginal ulceration
  • Fluctuation of weight
  • Swelling of extremities
  • If you spot any vaginal bleeding, dark urine, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, or blood in cough during the tenure of Depo-Provera at any point, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • If you have ever had vaginal bleeding other than menstruation, clotting, liver or kidney disease, stroke, breast or ovarian cancer, inform your doctor before getting on this medication.
  • Any case of uterus problems such as endometriosis or fibroids should be reported to the doctor as well.
  • Consumption of tobacco or cigarettes is strictly prohibited during the period.
  • Medroxyprogesterone 150mg Injection can lead to melasma and can worsen if you face the sun. Limit your time under the sun, and be fully clothed when outdoors.
  • Depo-Provera should not be used to cure Dementia.
  • If you are going to have major surgery, this medication should be discontinued at least 4 weeks before that.
  • Do not use estrogen-based birth control alternatives, rather use condoms.
  • Do not use this medication if you are a lactating or pregnant woman.
  • Store it a room temperature between 10°to 30°
  • It is not meant for children.

 

Interactions:

  • Depo-Provera can react negatively with certain medicines and result in pregnancy such as griseofulvin, rifamycins, modafinil, rifabutin, rifampin, felbamate, barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, topiramate, primidone, nevirapine, nelfinavir, ritonavir among others.

This drug can also interfere with certain laboratory tests and produce false results such as tests for hormone levels, thyroid, and blood.
