Methylprednisolone sodium succinate 40 mg/ml injection also known as Depo-Medrol, is a corticosteroid. It works by reducing the response of immune system towards various diseases.

Uses:

The injection is used when tablet cannot be taken. Various uses of Depo-Medrol 40 mg/ml are:

  • For the treatment of various allergic reactions- It is used to cure asthma, atopic dermatitis, hypersensitivity reactions caused due to drugs, contact dermatitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, serum sickness and reactions due to transfusion of blood.
  • For treating gastrointestinal disorders- Methylprednisolone sodium Succinate 40 mg/ml injection is used to treat chronic inflammation of the intestines and ulcer.
  • For treating hematologic disorders- Used to cure acquired anaemia, aplasia and congenital anaemia.
  • For treating endocrine disorders such as adrenal hyperplasia, thyroiditis.
  • For treating ophthalmic disorders such as sympathetic ophthalmia.
  • For treating respiratory disorders.
  • For treating nervous disorders such as edema and multiple sclerosis.

 

Dosage:

Each 1 ml of the solution contains 40 mg methylprednisolone sodium succinate. For reconstitution, use bacteriostatic water for injection with Benzyl Alcohol. The dosage differs according to the disease and weight of the patient, but in general it is given as:

Adults are given less than 16 mg/day or less than or equal to 4 mg/24 hours.

 

Side effects:

Various side effects of Depo-Medrol 40 mg/ml are:

  • Increase in number of white blood cells.
  • Allergies such as anaphylaxis.
  • Cardiovascular disorders such as cardiac arrest, hypertension.
  • Acne, dry skin, skin rashes or thinning of hair scalp.
  • Increase of cortisol hormone.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders such as bowel dysfunction.
  • Nitrogen imbalance.
  • Depression, mood swings, insomnia.
  • Increased pressure on eyes, hiccups.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • The medicine is sensitive to heat. Thus do not autoclave as it may alter the product.
  • In the patients suffering from heart failure or hypertension, Depo-Medrol 40 mg/ml should be used with caution as it may result in sodium retention.
  • In case of ulcer, the active ingredients may cause perforation. Thus precaution is required.
  • Use of Methylprednisolone sodium succinate 40 mg/ml injection decrease bone formation. Thus injecting on single site is not recommended.
  • Disease of muscles has been reported. So high dose of corticosteroid must be avoided in case of neurological disorders.
  • In case of pregnancy, the drug may interrupt with the growth of foetus, thus must be used with caution.
  • Patients must tell their doctor if they have been vaccinated recently.
