Drug Name: Divalproex 125mg, 250mg, 500mg Tablets
Details
Divalproex 125mg, 250mg, 500mg Tablets are Anticonvulsants and Antimigraine agents. It occurs as a white powder with a characteristic odour. Depakote is the universal name of this medication, by which it is available in the medical market.
Purpose:
Depakote is used to treat certain conditions:
- Seizure disorders
- Psychiatric condition: bipolar disorder
- Migraine headaches
- Mania
- Epilepsy
Mechanism:
Divalproex 125mg, 250mg, 500mg Tablets dissociate to the valproate ion in the gastrointestinal tract. The seizures or fits are controlled by decreasing the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cell in the brain.
Dosage:
- Dose for Mania: 750 mg daily, for 14 days.
- For Migraine: 250 mg twice daily.
- For Epilepsy: 750 mg, twice daily.
- Divalproex 125mg, 250mg, 500mg Tablets are meant for oral consumption only, with or without food.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Depakote are nausea, somnolence, dizziness, vomiting, accidental injury, asthenia, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and rash.
- Adverse side effects are hepatic failure, birth defects, decreased IQ following in utero exposure, pancreatitis, hyperammonemia encephalopathy, suicidal behaviour, and ideation, bleeding and other hematopoietic disorders, hypothermia, and multiorgan hypersensitivity reactions.
- If any of the above-mentioned effects appear or start to get worse, consult your doctor right away.
Precautions and measures:
- To avoid an upset stomach, take this medicine with food.
- Do not suddenly change the brand of your drug.
- Practice yoga every day.
- Limit your screen time.
- Get enough sleep of at least 8 hours during the night.
- Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it might lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
- Get regular blood tests done to monitor how this drug is affecting your body.
- Do not increase, decrease or stop the medication at your own ease.
- Low dose aspirin, given for prevention of stroke, by your doctor, should be continued.
- Do not use expired medication.
- Keep it away from kids and pets.
- Store it at room temperature.
Interactions:
- Patients suffering from hepatic disease or hepatic dysfunction, should not be treated with these tablets.
- Contradictions are believed to occur in patients suffering from mitochondrial disorders caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA polymerase, using Divalproex 125mg, 250mg, 500mg Tablets at the same time.
- People taking hypersensitivity medicines and this drug at the same time can experience fatal effects.
- Urea cycle disorders patients should not be treated with Depakote.
Medicines that contradict this drug are Imipenem, Doripenem, Ethosuximide, Lamotrigine, Zidovudine, Warfarin, Rifampin, Phenytoin, Orlistat, Mefloquine, Irinotecan, and Amitriptyline.
