Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) Vaccine is used to prevent cervical cancer. It has been shown to be the most effective during adolescence or childhood. Cervarix is its universal name by which it is available. If put during adulthood, it can be beneficial too. It is a non-infectious intramuscular recombinant injection.

 

Purpose:

  • Human Papillomavirus causes genital warts and cervical cancer in humans. Cervical cancer is not developed by men, but getting vaccinated with this medication, can prevent the risk of being affected with genital warts, anal cancer, and penile cancer. Cervarix inhibits the growth of HPV Types inside the human body.
  • It also recommended for men who are having sex with the same gender or with a transgendered human, to prevent the spread of HPV Types to their sexual partner via sexual intercourse.

 

Mechanism:

  • This vaccine is prepared by combining each HPV Type together with adsorbed Virus-Like Particles along with the AS04 adjuvant system in sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium chloride, and water put together in an injection.
  • The immune system of the body gets provoked by Papillomavirus and when the body is exposed to foreign organisms, it produces antibodies against the virus and protects the body.

 

Dosage:

  • For men, it is recommended to get Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) Vaccine done between the age of 9 and 21.
  • For females, it is recommended to get this vaccination between the age of 9 and 25.
  • However, in some cases, exceptions might extend the age to 26yrs for men.

 

Side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Arm pain
  • Vomiting
  • There can be serious side effects such as seizures, blood clots, chronic fatigue syndrome, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuro therapy. If any of this happens, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Always shake the syringe well before use.
  • If the liquid appears to be anything else other than being white, turbid, and homogeneous in appearance, it should not be administered.
  • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) Vaccine should only be injected intramuscularly.
  • Pregnant women should not get injected with Cervarix.
  • Lactating mothers are safe to get this vaccine done.
  • Do not mix this vaccine with the syringe of any other vaccine.
  • Caps of prefilled syringes contain rubber latex, which can be a source of an allergic reaction.
  • Screening for cervical cancer in no way is a substitute for this vaccine and should be continued strictly.

 

Interactions:

Immunosuppressive therapies, cytotoxic drugs, antimetabolites, irradiation, corticosteroids, and alkylating agents can reduce the immune response of the Cervarix vaccine to antibodies.
