Testosterone 1% w/w Gel is used in the treatment of testosterone deficiency in men. This medication can also be used in combination with other drugs. It is known as Androgel all over the world. In India, it is known by the name Cernos.

 

Purpose:

  • Testosterone is helpful for the growth and development of male sex organs. So, when the body doesn’t produce sufficient testosterone hormone Cernos gel is used as hormone replacement therapy for producing endogenous testosterone.
  • Men with primary hypogonadism such as testicular failure due to orchitis, bilateral torsion, vanishing testis syndrome contain low serum testosterone levels. Therefore, these medications are used.

 

How does it work?

Testosterone 1% w/w Gel belongs to the androgens class of drugs. When the gel is applied to the body it acts by binding to the androgen receptor and by increasing the testosterone production in the body.

 

Dosage:

  • Read the instructions carefully before you start using the gel. Check the label for the directions before using Testosterone 1% w/w Gel.
  • The dose depends upon the patient’s condition and should be applied as directed by the physician.
  • The dose of the gel is 1% 50mg testosterone applied topically once daily or as advised by the doctor.
  • Cernos gel is applied on the clean and dry skin of the left and right upper arms or it can be applied on the left and right side of the abdomen region and should be massaged evenly.
  • It should be left to dry before the dressing.
  • Wash your hands with soap after the application of the gel.
  • If this medication gets into your eye, rinse immediately with warm water.

 

Side effects:

Testosterone 1% w/w Gel may cause serious side effects

Common side effects:

  • Skin irritation, rashes, itching,
  • Swelling in the body mainly in the leg
  • Muscle ache
  • Increased B.P
  • Nausea and vomiting

Serious side effects:

  • Increased or painful urination
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Angina pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Troubled breathing
  • Clay-colored stools

If the above-mentioned symptoms occur or become troublesome, get immediate medical help.

 

Precautions:

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Cernos gel.
  • You should be away from the fire after the application of gel as it is flammable until it’s dry.
  • Avoid driving after the use of this medication as this drug makes you feel dizzy.
  • Avoid contact with children or women until you wash your hands and the site of application.
  • Tell your physician about all the previous or undergoing medical therapy before you start using this gel.
  • Lactating mothers and pregnant women should avoid contact with this drug as it may cause harmful effects to the unborn baby.
  • Elder people should be cautioned while using this drug as they can be at high risk of prostate problems.

 

Storage:

  • Androgel is stored at room temperature of 25°C.

This medication should be disposed of in the trash to avoid accidental use by the children.
