Details

Clarithromycin 500mg Tablets are Macrolide Antimicrobial antibiotics. These are insoluble in water. Biaxin is the international name of this drug, whereas, in India, it is available under the brand name of Celex.

Purpose:

Biaxin  is used to treat certain conditions:

  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Skin structure and uncomplicated skin infections
  • Acute otitis media
  • Treatment and prophylaxis of disseminated mycobacterial infections
  • Helicobacter pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease

 

Mechanism:

Clarithromycin 500mg Tablets prevents the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out essential functions. This medicine stops the growth of the bacteria and does not let the infection enter the body.

 

Dosage:

  • For acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 250-500 mg, every 12 hours, for 7-14 days.
  • For acute maxillary sinusitis: 500 mg, every 12 hours, for 14 days.
  • For community-acquired pneumonia: 250 mg, every 12 hours l, for 7-14 days.
  • For pharyngitis/tonsillitis: 250 mg, every 12 hours, for 10 days.
  • For disseminated mycobacterium avium disease: 500 mg, every 12 hours.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Celex are nausea, somnolence, dizziness, vomiting, accidental injury, asthenia, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and rash.
  • Acute hypersensitivity reaction
  • Serious adverse reactions due to concomitant use of other drugs
  • QT prolongation
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis
  • Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea
  • Thrombocythemia, cardiac arrest, palpitations, glossitis, pyrexia, atrial fibrillation, neutropenia, and eosinophilia are other side effects.
  • If any of the above-mentioned effects appear or start to get worse due to the consumption of Celex tablets, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Inform your doctor if you have had a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, and myasthenia gravis, before getting on this medication.
  • Low levels of magnesium or potassium can increase in the blood and can lead to QT prolongation.
  • Avoid consuming water pills and diuretics.
  • Certain vaccines might not perform well during the tenure of this medication such as typhoid live bacterial vaccine.
  • Do not use expired medication.
  • Keep it away from kids and pets.
  • Store it at room temperature.
  • Get regular blood tests done to monitor how this drug is affecting your body.
  • Do not increase, decrease or stop Clarithromycin 500mg Tablets at your own ease.

 

Interactions:

  • Certain products that can react with Celex tablets are amiodarone, dofetilide, quinidine, pimozide, disopyramide, and sotalol. It can affect the heart rhythm.

Clarithromycin 500mg Tablets might not let other drugs show their desired results when used together, such as digoxin, lovastatin, ergotamine, colchicine, simvastatin, tolvaptan, tamsulosin, ticagrelor among others.
