Cefuroxime 125, 250, 500mg Tablets are cephalosporin antibiotics. They are used to treat bacterial infections. In India, it is available by the name of Ceftum and Internationally it is known as Zinnat.

 

Purpose:

  • These tablets work by blocking the growth of bacteria.
  • Certain infections like bronchitis, otitis, pharyngitis, and sinusitis are cured by the treatment of Zinnat.
  • Some infections of the urinary tract, impetigo, gonorrhoea, and Lyme disease are also treated with Cefuroxime 125, 250, 500mg Tablets.

 

Dosage:

  • Ceftum tablets should be swallowed through the mouth only.
  • Take them as directed by your physician/doctor.
  • If self-administered, Cefuroxime 125, 250, 500mg Tablets should be consumed twice daily, at a break of 12 hours each.
  • For effective results, treatment should be continued for 10 days.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects: stomachache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and nausea.
  • Jarisch reaction, which is a short term visible reaction after consuming an antibiotic which includes muscle pain, fever, and chills.
  • If faced with serious side effects such as hives or swelling of lips, face, nose, tongue etc. you should consult your doctor or immediately.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Ceftum dosage for people suffering from kidney disease needs to be modified.
  • This medication in no way should be crushed and consumed because they have a strong bitter taste.
  • Inform your doctor if you’re allergic to Cephalexin or Penicillin.
  • These tablets might reduce the effect of bacterial vaccines therefore they should be done during the treatment if permitted by the doctor.
  • It has been established that it passes into breast milk hence, lactating and pregnant women should consume it if very much needed.
  • Cefuroxime 125, 250, 500mg Tablets are not meant to cure viral infections such as the common cold. They may only worsen the condition if taken to treat such infections.

 

Storage:

  • These tablets should be stored between 15°C and 30°C of temperature.
  • It should be kept away from moisture, light, and dampness.
  • Keep these antibiotics out of reach of pets and children.
  • Do not use expired medication.

 

Interactions:

  • No blood thinners such as warfarin should be used along with medication of Ceftum tablets.
  • Oral contraceptives such as birth control pills tend to reduce the effect of these tablets.
  • Probenecid if consumed along with this drug increases the amount of it in our body and can be fatal.

Always consume antacids such as magnesium hydroxide at least 1 hour before, or 2 hours later of taking this medication to avoid the reverse effect.
