Cabergoline 0.25mg, 0.5mg Tablets are Antiparkinsonian drugs. They are a dopamine receptor agonist. Internationally, they are known by the names Dostinex and Cabaser. In Indian pharmacies, they are available under the brand name Cabgolin.

Purpose:

  • They are used for treating high levels of prolactin.
  • Cabergoline 0.25mg, 0.5mg Tablets are also helpful in obstructing breast milk production in cases of abortion, stillbirth, or miscarriage.
  • Treating hyperprolactinemic disorders, due to pituitary adenomas or idiopathic disorders.

 

Mechanism:

Dostinex decreases the production of prolactin in the female body, which encourages the release of breast milk. This hormone in the anterior pituitary is under hypothalamic inhibitory control.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your physician.
  • The recommended dosage for effective results is 0.25 mg twice a week at an initial stage.
  • Dosage can be increased to 1 mg twice a week as per the serum prolactin level of the patient.
  • An increase in the dosage of Cabgolin should not occur before a month.
  • After a period of 6 months, when a stable schedule had been maintained, these Cabgolin tablets might be discontinued, after consulting your doctor.
  • The tablet should not be swallowed along with food.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Cabaser are blurred vision, drowsiness, hot flashes, indigestion, nausea, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, headache, vertigo, and vomiting.
  • Adverse side effects can be nervousness, increased sexual urges, painful menses, symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath, changes in vision, breast pain, and sudden gain in weight.
  • Medical help should be sought right away if kidney problems are experienced such as flank pain, or dark urine.
  • An allergic reaction to this drug is rare, but if experienced, visit your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • To minimize the chances of passing out or feeling dizzy, rise slowly if you have been lying down.
  • Prohibit or at the very least limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Keep on checking blood pressure regularly.
  • Cabergoline 0.25mg, 0.5mg Tablets are absorbed by lungs and skin and therefore are advised not to be taken by pregnant ladies as it can harm the unborn baby.
  • Breastfeeding should be avoided during the tenure of this medication.
  • Hypotension might be experienced if the initial dose is higher than 1 mg.
  • Patients with hepatic impairment should not self-administer Cabgolin tablets.
  • The safety of this drug has not been established for pediatric consumption.

 

Interactions:

Cabergoline 0.25mg, 0.5mg Tablets should not be consumed along with Phenothiazines, Metoclopramide, Butyrophenones, or Thioxanthenes.
