Details
Ibandronate sodium (Ibandronic acid) 6mg Injection belongs to the bisphosphonate group of drugs that are used in diseases of imbalance of bone minerals.
It reduces bone resorption, increases bone density and reduces bone fractures.
This drug is effective in both men and women also for various causes of osteoporosis.
It is one of the bisphosphonates available for the cliniclause.
Mechanism of action: it is a synthetic preparation similar to pyrophosphate, which bind strongly to the bone surface and inhibit bone resorption and secondary bone formation.
It is available as Boniva, Bondronat and Bonviva in the International market and as Bondronat in the Indian market.
Uses
- Bondronat is used in osteoporosis due to menopause, long-term use of glucocorticoids or other drugs,endocrine disease such as thyrotoxicosis or hyperparathyroidism, alcohol, cigarette smoking.
- Ibandronate sodium (Ibandronic acid) 6mg Injection is prescribed in bone cancer related osteoporosis and osteoporosis in men.
- It is also given in hypercalcemia.
- Bonviva is used in the treatment of Paget’s disease along with calcitonin.
- It is also used to prevent bone fractures especially vertebral fracture due to different kinds of bone related diseases.
- It is safe to use in osteoporosis in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
- It is also prescribed to prevent bone damage from glucocorticoids treatment and as pain therapy to treat bone pain.
Dosage
- Ibandronate sodium (Ibandronic acid) 6mg Injection comes as a single dose vial containing clear,colorless concentrate solution for infusion.
- It is always injected by a healthcare professional intravenously for over 15 minutes,do not self inject.
- Dosages are determined by the doctor according to the severity of osteoporosis, weight, response and side effects of the body to the drug.
- Boniva is given 3 mg /every 3 months in osteoporosis intravenously.
- Dosages are also adjusted according to the dose related side effects

Precautions
- Patients must maintain good dental hygiene and have dental checkups to avoid osteonecrosis of the jaw.
- Bondronat is not safe to use during pregnancy,always inform the doctor about the pregnancy or future plans of pregnancy.
- tell the doctor about ongoing medications and any allergy before starting the drug.
- Ibandronate sodium (Ibandronic acid) 6mg Injection must be used with caution in kidney disease patients, regular monitoring is necessary to avoid complications.
Alcohol and smoking must be avoided while taking this drug.
