Monobenzone 20% cream is a skin lightening agent used for depigmenting skin. It increases the elimination of melanin (pigment molecules) from skin cells.  Because of the decrease of melanin, the area of normal skin gradually lightens to match the patches of the paler skin. It helps in the topical medication to get rid of vitiligo. Monobenzone is also known by the name of Benoquin worldwide.

PURPOSE:

  • Benoquin is used to treat vitiligo; which is the uneven appearance of the skin due to loss of skin colour.
  • To permanently depigment normal skin surrounding vitiliginous lesions in patients with disseminated idiopathic vitiligo it is advised and prescribed to use Monobenzone 20% cream.

 

DOSAGE:

  • A thin layer of Benoquin cream should be applied to normal-colouredskin, twice or thrice a day, if self-administered. Rub it gently.
  • If it has been prescribed by the doctor, use it as directed by him/her.
  • It can be used usually two times a week, once the desired skin colour is achieved.
  • For the completion of treatment, it may take up to 4 months. Until then keep using this cream.

 

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Untreated skin may also become irregular in appearance or discoloured. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Irritation, cracking, redness, mild burning, or peeling of the treated area might occur due to usage of Monobenzone 20%.
  • There can be a serious allergic reaction to it but is extremely rare.
  • If you face difficulty in breathing, swelling of your tongue, lips, face, or throat, you should seek emergency medical help.

 

PRECAUTIONS AND MEASURES:

  • Exposure to tanning beds or sunlight must be avoided.
  • When outdoors, it is advised to wear protective clothing.
  • The use of sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is highly recommended whenever going out in the sun.
  • Not to be used to treat other skin discolouration problems such as freckles, sun spots, or age spots.
  • Do not use monobenzone for your eyes, mouth, or any pubic area of your body.
  • Monobenzone 20% cream is not a mild cosmetic bleach and therefore should not be used for shingles, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis among others.
  • If the condition of your skin doesn’t show any sign of betterment within 1 month, inform your doctor.
  • Do not use expired medication.

STORAGE:

  • Benoquin should be stored at room temperature of 25°C.
  • Keep it away from moisture, light, and dampness.

Monobenzone 20% cream should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
